Silo author Hugh Howey gives a different Apple TV science-fiction series his full support.
Hugh Howey's Silo books have been adapted into Apple TV's hit sci-fi series of the same name, telling the story of Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), a society that lives underground, and the secrets behind the history that placed them there. The fourth and final season has already been filmed and is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2027. It was shot back-to-back with season 3, which released its episodes earlier this year.
On Threads, Howey has now endorsed Apple TV's Dark Matter. In response to a post featuring the show's poster that encourages others to watch, the Silo author wrote, "Get on it, people! The best show airing right now."
Dark Matter is based on Blake Crouch's 2016 sci-fi novel, which revolves around physicist Jason Dessen being kidnapped and finding himself in a parallel universe. Joel Edgerton plays Jason and all other variants of him in the Apple TV series, which explores the multiverse and infinite realities through a black cube called the Box. The cast also features Jennifer Connelly as Daniela Dessen, Oakes Fegley as Charlie Dessen, Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas, Jimmi Simpson as Ryan Holder, Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton Vance, Amanda Brugel as Blair Caplan, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Mitchel MacNamara.
By the end of Dark Matter season 1, the show had fully adapted Crouch's source material. However, it was renewed for a second season that goes beyond the book and into uncharted territory of what comes next for the variants of Jason and the other characters. Crouch created the show and serves as the showrunner of both seasons, the second of which is in the midst of releasing new episodes after premiering on August 28.
Having the Dark Matter cast playing multiple versions of their characters, including scenes where the variants interact with one another, makes it Apple TV's most ambitious science-fiction series, along with the massive scope that comes with the multiverse, endless realities, and charting a story that no longer has source material.
While Silo's ending has already been confirmed, there may be more to come with Crouch's series. Executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, who also happens to be Crouch's wife, previously shared Dark Matter season 3 plans with ScreenRant, explaining that they pitched season 2 to Apple TV as only the second part of a trilogy. Season 3 has not been officially renewed yet, but the streamer knows that the creative team intends to do one more.
As of this writing, both Dark Matter and Silo are performing well on Apple TV's streaming charts, with the former in third place and the latter in fourth worldwide. In the U.S., Dark Matter is at number four on the chart and Silo is number six. While Crouch's show is still releasing new episodes for season 2, the Silo season 3 finale came out about a month ago on September 4, making the series' current streaming performance all the more impressive.
Dark Matter season 2 releases new episodes on Fridays on Apple TV.
