Kirsty Wark has become a grandmother for the first time as she revealed her daughter Caitlin Clements has given birth to a baby girl in a post shared to Instagram.

The broadcaster, 70, who stepped down from Newsnight in 2024 after more than 30 years, posted a snap of the newborn sleeping in a bassinet.

Caitlin, 35, a television executive, and her husband, civil servant Callum Galloway, have named their daughter Maisie.

Proudly posting a photo of the baby online, Kirsty wrote: 'We are all so happy the stork brought you safely here. I'm beside myself with being a grandma.'

Her followers flocked to her comment box to congratulate the news star as the One Show's Lauren Laverne, commented: 'How utterly fab. Congratulations.'

Alan Cumming, host of The Traitors US, chimed in with: 'Congrats to all and much love.'

Kirsty, who now presents Front Row on Radio 4, also has a son, actor James, 33, with her husband, TV producer Alan Clements.

She has covered several general elections and a host of major international news events, as well as presenting BBC2 arts programme The Late Show and fronting Words with Wark and The Kirsty Wark Show.

Kirsty was named Journalist of the Year by Bafta Scotland in 1993 and Best Television Presenter in 1997.

She was also honoured with a BAFTA Fellowship earlier last year.

Never one to shy from controversy, she responded to a plea from Tory MP Andrew Rosindell for a return to broadcasting the national anthem.

She said at the end of a Newsnight broadcast that they were 'incredibly happy to oblige' before playing a clip of the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen, which was banned by the BBC when it was released during the late Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

She has also appeared in Celebrity MasterChef and played a cameo role as herself in Doctor Who and Absolutely Fabulous.
