Robert Wood is a writer and editor based out of Cheshire, England. He is the author of 'The False Elephant: and 99 Other Unreasonably Short Stories' - 100 stories, each told in exactly 100 words.

Rob got into comics via Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man and the UK anthology 'The Mighty World of Marvel,' which was running Frank Miller's Daredevil, Classic Hulk and Contest of Champions II.

Prior to journalism, he worked in copywriting and copyedited for Oxford University Press. He is on X as @PinchTwigs and Instagram as roobwoodjourno.

Iconic Batman villain the Scarecrow just received his greatest redesign of all time, finally turning the fear-based villain into literal nightmare fuel. While fans had seen an obscured look at Scarecrow's new design, newly released art showcases its full glory.

Scarecrow Is a Living Corpse in New Batman Art

Shared to Instagram, artist Mark Spears has revealed his upcoming variant cover for Absolute Batman #19. The image showcases this new continuity's version of the Scarecrow - a patchwork zombie with no lips and buttons sewn over his eyes. The supervillain has flat out never looked so convincingly scary.

Absolute Batman fans already knew the details of Scarecrow's new look. Nick Dragotta's cover shows Scarecrow reflected in Batman's knives, but with one image distant and the other warped by the blade.

However, Spears' art gets in closer, with a realistic style that makes the villain feel chillingly present. The Batman foe has the appearance of a body mutilated to resemble a sackcloth scarecrow, with a crow sitting on his shoulder, presumably waiting on the fresh corpses he's about to create.

So far, fans don't know much about Absolute Scarecrow, other than that he's one of the doctors who carried out monstrous experiments at the Ark M facility, creating monstrosities like Killer Croc and Bane. From this new look at the character, it's pretty clear he's been experimenting on himself.

Absolute Batman Is Batting 100 with Its Villain Redesigns

Since its launch in 2024, Absolute Batman has earned a reputation for its monstrous villains. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta rightly identified that Batman has the most iconic rogues gallery in superhero history, using the new Absolute continuity as an excuse to remix each into a horrifying new form.

Scarecrow is the latest to be given the Absolute treatment, and while he may not be a hulking kaiju (yet), it's clear that the book's creative team are nowhere near dropping the ball on their reputation for grotesques.

Scarecrow Isn't Exactly Low on Fantastic Redesigns

To call Dragotta's redesign the best yet is high praise, given that Scarecrow has received perhaps the best designs of any supervillain. Debuting in 1941's World's Finest Comics #3, Bob Kane and Bill Finger nailed the villain's creepy look out of the gate, depicting him as a traditional scarecrow with rigid arms and legs.

Along the way, Tim Sale turned the Scarecrow into an angular ghoul for The Long Halloween, Sal Amendola turned him into a Hammer movie monster, and Dustin Nguyen into a giggling, red-eyed child-snatcher with a sack over his head.

Arguably another contender for the character's best redesign is Jorge Jiménez's recent reinvention of Scarecrow with a gas mask and straw hat, made all the more terrifying by his treatment as a serial killer who stands silently in the background, his victims unaware of his presence.

In other media, Bruce Timm's Batman: The Animated Series design gave him a subtly disturbing crooked lip, while The New Batman Adventures included an intimidating noose.

Batman Begins focused on the transformative power of the mask, unleashing Cillian Murphy's inner darkness. The Arkham games and the Gotham TV show arguably went overboard, but even this 'more is more' approach sometimes works - Injustice 2 depicts Scarecrow as an absolute monster, with the premise that that's how his victims perceive him after a face full of fear gas.

Over the years, Scarecrow has received some truly fantastic new looks, but Absolute Batman is the first time he's looked like he genuinely belongs in a horror movie. Fans can check out the upcoming Absolute Batman #19 for more of the monstrous Doctor Crane.

Absolute Batman #19 is coming April 15 from DC Comics.
