The animated Batman movie also shows some thought has clearly been put into how to pace the trilogy and its adaptation of the comic story, since Part 1 closes just after the most impactful plot point in the overarching narrative, creating a suitably action-packed finale for the film, and finishing the first chapter on a note that is a major cliffhanger of sorts for the wider story and trilogy to follow up on.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1 Ends With One Of DC's Most Iconic Moments

Fittingly, Batman: Knightfall Part 1 ends with the most famous moment from the comic run of the same name - which is also one of the most iconic Batman moments of all time - with Bane breaking the Dark Knight's back at the end of their fight. Worse yet, Bane adds insult to injury by leaving him broken and unconscious on top of a batsignal, as a final insult to the Dark Knight's legacy.

This makes sense, as Bane breaking Batman's spine in their fight is a crucial plot point of Knightfall, and a good dramatic point to end the first film in the trilogy on.

Much like in the comics, most of Batman: Knightfall Part 1 builds up to this point, first by showing Bane's origin story, and then by having the villain mirror his comic plan of unleashing a range of other DC villains that Batman has to deal with first, before he then confronts and beats down the weakened hero, allowing this scene to be a dramatic conclusion to the first leg of the animated movie trilogy.

While Batman: Knightfall Part 1's Azrael and Robin story might seem like a B-plot used as a side story to add more dimension to the narrative, the duo appearing in this chapter of the film series helps to set up the movies to adapt how the pair become more crucial in the next leg of the Knightfall story.

In the comics, after Batman's back is broken by Bane, he is subsequently paralyzed for a portion of time, having to undergo rehabilitation in order to regain use of his legs and motor function. During this period, Bruce Wayne gives Jean-Paul Valley the Batman mantle, asking him to take over and protect the city instead.

Azrael and Robin's time together in Batman: Knightfall Part 1 foreshadows their later experience as the crime-fighting duo of Batman and Robin, which looks as though it will crop up in Part 2 of the film adaptation. Part 1 also sets up the conflict that emerges between these two as well, since Jean-Paul Valley's fragile mental and emotional state combined with Tim Drake's eagerness to push the duo's limits already appears to be a recipe for disaster.

That said, both approaches are exciting to note, and mean the trilogy can go into far more depth with its rendition of the wider comic than The Dark Knight Rises was able to in its more limited adaptation of Knightfall. Indeed, Rises generated some complaints from fans about plot holes arguably in part as a result of its lighter approach to adapting only some elements of Knightfall, leaving the plot generating some easy-to-question elements like Bruce Wayne's finances being entirely neutralized by Bane's sketchy stock market trades in order to justify its story.

Given Batman: Knightfall Part 1 ends with some of the regular Knightfall storyline left, the trilogy may split itself into three by covering up to Bruce Wayne's injury in Part 1, covering Azrael taking up the Batman mantle and his deteriorating sanity in Part 2, and Azrael's defeat of Bane as Batman in Part 3, though this seems perhaps less likely, since it would avoid Bruce's own return as Batman.

Instead, it seems more possible that each part of the Knightfall trilogy will adapt a different named part of the overarching comic narrative. Following this logic, Part 2 would then take on the Knightquest story, wherein Azrael becomes more lethal and unhinged as Batman, and Bruce Wayne solves a mystery involving Tim Drake's father and Bruce's previous physical therapist Shondra Kinsolving, allowing him to return to Gotham, and leading into his final conflict with Azrael via adapting the climactic KnightsEnd as Part 3.

While this would best explain why Batman: Knightfall Part 1's full extended title is Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, either route should lead to dramatic moments and fights aplenty for the Knightfall film trilogy, and ensure that the Batman movies retain what makes the comic story such a lastingly beloved and special part of the Dark Knight's inked history.
