Cristian Romero will not be moving to Barcelona. Manager Hansi Flick confirmed the club has decided against pursuing the Argentine defender, drawing a line under a transfer saga that dragged through much of July and into early August 2026.
Interest in Romero had been circulating since the summer window opened, with a deal in the region of €50 million floated as the potential price tag for the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back.
Romero, for his part, reportedly held off on other offers while Barcelona’s deliberations continued. One of those offers came from Inter Milan, meaning Spurs’ defensive linchpin was effectively keeping his options on ice waiting for Camp Nou to make up its mind.
Barcelona ultimately decided not to move. Flick cited satisfaction with the centre-backs already at his disposal: Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, and Andreas Christensen form the core of the defensive unit the manager plans to work with heading into the new season.
One complicating thread in this story involves Ronald Araújo, the Uruguayan centre-back who has been linked with a loan move to Liverpool. Barcelona’s management concluded that even accounting for possible squad changes, the existing options were sufficient, and the financial outlay for Romero was not worth committing to at this stage of the window.
Barcelona has spent years navigating significant debt and the constraints that come with it. Signing a player in the €50 million range, on top of what would presumably be a substantial wage commitment, requires a very specific kind of justification. A position already covered by three established defenders did not easily provide it.
