Movies based on true stories tend to captivate audiences in a different way. Oftentimes, they show the very best of humanity and put life into perspective while also inspiring us to leave the cinema and do our very best to contribute to the world around us. Today, we at Collider are thrilled to pair with Samuel Goldwyn Films to exclusively announce the March 20 U.S. release of the studio’s latest drama, Mr. Burton, and unveil a brand-new trailer of the Harry Lawtey (Industry), Toby Jones (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), and Lesley Manville (The Crown) led feature. This time around, the focus of the film will be centered on the rise of seven-time Academy Award nominee Richard Burton (Lawtey), who, thanks to the inspiration of a mentor-turned-adopted-father (Jones), pursued his love for acting and took Hollywood by storm.

The project is the latest to hail from filmmaker Marc Evans, who previously lent his vision to such titles as Hunky Dory, Patagonia, and the critically celebrated 1997 feature, House of America. Having already celebrated its cinematic release abroad, Mr. Burton has proven to be a success for the studio, landing an 89% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and raking in four nominations at the BAFTA Cymru Awards as well as one nod at the BAFTAs. In addition to the leading trio, the heartfelt and uplifting picture also features the talents of an ensemble that includes Daniel Evans (Les Misérables), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Peaky Blinders), Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen), Hannah New (Bridgerton), Steffan Rhodri (Gavin & Stacey), and Matthew Gravelle (Broadchurch).

The 'Mr. Burton' Trailer Showcases a Star on the Rise

The trailer introduces viewers to Richard Burton (Lawtey) when he was still Richard Jenkins and just a young lad studying alongside peers in a schoolhouse. At the front of the classroom, Philip Burton (Jones) passes back tests and hits Richard with the punishment of memorizing the prologue of Henry V by heart. Quickly grasping onto the words of William Shakespeare, the student masters the monologue and tells his teacher that it wasn’t a punishment at all. Meanwhile, we see the rough upbringing that Richard has so far faced at home, which doesn’t lend itself to his newfound dreams of becoming an actor. Taking the young man under his wing, Philip does everything in his power to see his dream become a reality — including eventually adopting him and giving him his last name. Through long rehearsals, doubt, and inner turmoil, Richard rises through the ranks to get his big shot on stage and the chance to forever change the industry.

Check out our exclusive first look at Mr. Burton above and see it in cinemas in the U.S. on March 20.
