James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
There are few, if any, more iconic and beloved franchises in film history than Back to the Future, particularly in the sci-fi genre. The performances of Michael J. Fox and Christoper Lloyd are the biggest contributors to that, with both characters serving as immensely recognizable cultural touchstones at this point.
With all of that in mind, it's a little weird just how little we've seen of the franchise in other mediums. It has appeared elsewhere over the years, but not with the same frequency as other IPs with a similar scope of appeal. That's all about to change though, and the movie is about to show up in a very literal sense in a brand new video game release.
Saber InteractiveIn case you missed all of the excitement at the recent State of Play, the event marked the return of a criminally underrated franchise, with Saber Interactive confirming that Stuntman: Hollywood is actively under development.
The Stuntman series was a ton of fun across the two games we've had so far. It essentially allowed players to hit huge stunts in vehicles, all to get the shots we need for different movies, before we then get to watch the rendered movie, once we've done our job as the daredevil driver.
As shared in a trailer on Twitter/X by Discussing Film, Stuntman: Hollywood is the first we've seen of the series since 2007 though, and it's set to bounce back in a very big way. As part of that, the stunts we're doing this time out are all drawn from real-world productions, including Fast & Furious, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, Death Race, and the aformentioned Back to the Future.
Watching the Delorean tear down the street and crash through a moving billboard is very cool indeed, and it really does feel like a natural home for the movie overall. Though we'll obviously have to wait and see what the gameplay is actually like, the addition of licensed properties to the equation feels like a masterstroke, and a logical step to immediately generate more appeal.
As you might expect, fans were delighted by what they have seen so far, with one saying, "Real mfs remember this classic hopefully it’s a spiritual successor."
While another added, "Damn, watched this gameplay a couple of times…it looks amazing."
Saber InteractiveThe only caveat to all of that good fun is that Stuntman: Hollywood doesn't have a confirmed release date just yet, so we will likely be waiting a while to see exactly what Saber Interactive has been cooking up. Still, it's lovely that Back to the Future will be a part of that equation, even if it won't replace a direct adaptation.
