Just like how Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were released in back-to-back Aprils in 2018 and 2019, Marvel is looking at another one-two Avengers punch this December and next. Avengers: Doomsday is all set to premiere in theaters on Dec. 18, and Avengers: Secret Wars is slated for Dec. 17, 2027.

However, recent rumors have made fans worry that Avengers: Secret Wars might slip out of its December 2027 release date. MCU leakers have said principal photography for the movie has been delayed to January of next year. Now, one of its stars has said he won't finish filming until next summer, raising eyebrows among Marvel fans wondering if Secret Wars will get hit with a delay.

Anthony Mackie won't finish filming his Avengers: Secret Wars scenes until next summer

On Monday, Oct. 5, Deadline reported Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Captain America in the MCU, will return to the stage with the role of Thane of Cawdor in Macbeth next year. Rehearsals start in February, and the play will run until July. "Once I finish on Broadway, I’ll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars," Mackie told Deadline.

If he doesn't finish filming his Secret Wars scenes until July 2027 at the earliest, that would mean the sixth Avengers movie would still be filming five months before its planned release — quite the tight turnaround. Principal photography for Doomsday wrapped in Sept. 2025, over a year before its December 2026 release. It's a sharp contrast to the production of Infinity War and Endgame, which were filmed back-to-back with just a few weeks' reprieve in between.

Because of movie-making wizardry, it's possible Mackie films his scenes next summer like Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) did for Avengers: Doomsday — alone with a bunch of green screen. Neither Marvel nor Disney has officially commented on any rumored filming delays for Avengers: Secret Wars. If all goes to plan, it'll be in theaters next December.
