The Visual Effects Society (VES) held its 24th Annual VES Awards at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, and it was a night of Fire (and Ash). “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which won seven awards in total, including the top prize of Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. Additional wins for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” included Outstanding Character in a Photoreal Feature for Varang (Oona Chaplin), Outstanding CG Cinematography, and the Emerging Technology Award, given to the Kora Fire Toolset.
Meanwhile, in the animation categories, “KPop Demon Hunters” led the night with three awards, including the top prize of Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature, and Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature for Rumi (Arden Cho). There are some bright spots for “Sinners,” which won for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects, and “Zootopia 2,” which won for Outstanding Environment in an Animated Feature, but “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “KPop Demon Hunters” look pretty locked into their respective categories here — and going into the Oscars.
However, the VES awards not only distinguish between animated and photoreal (or live-action) features. The organization of over 5,500 VFX professionals also gives out awards for excellent work in environments, character design, and effect simulations in television, commercials, and other media projects. “Ghost of Yotei” won for a real-time project (as video games mostly are), while “Andor,” “The Last of Us,” “Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age,” and “It: Welcome to Derry” all won awards for different outstanding aspects of their visual effects in specific episodes of television.
Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer was honored with the VES Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by his longtime collaborator, “F1: The Movie” director Joseph Kosinski. Wētā Workshop co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Sir Richard Taylor received this year’s VES Visionary Award, presented by Adam Savage.
