Aussie Pirates of the Caribbean actor reveals Johnny Depp disappeared from set amid Amber Heard legal woes: 'I was sitting around for 12-and-a-half hours'

Australian actor Brenton Thwaites has revealed what it was like to work with Johnny Depp as the A-lister's relationship with Amber Heard disintegrated.

Thwaites, 35, co-starred alongside Depp in the fifth instalment in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The production was surrounded by drama that kept Depp away from set for a considerable amount of time.

In March 2015, while filming in Queensland, Depp had his finger sliced off in what the actor claimed was sustained during a fight with his then partner Heard.

During his absence, when he was flown back to the US for surgery, production came to a standstill with more than 200 crew members.

It was also during this time that Depp and Heard were embroiled in a very public dispute with the Federal Government after they illegally brought their dogs, Pistol and Boo, into the country.

Depp and Heard's acrimonious relationship eventually played out in a very public 2022 US defamation trial.

Thwaites told News Corp that despite all of the drama surrounding the production, at the time, he was completely unaware of the volatile nature of Depp's relationship with Heard.

'Now I know "oh, that’s why maybe Johnny wasn’t coming to work" or "that’s why I was sitting around learning flamenco for 12-and-a-half hours by my trailer waiting for people to come to work",' he told the publication.

He added that, while unsure if the Depp and Heard drama was a reason for the film's disappointing box office returns, much of what eventually played out in the highly publicised 2022 trial occurred during filming the blockbuster.

'I don’t know if that was the reason why it didn’t do as well, but definitely [in 2022] the biggest show in the entire world was the Johnny and Amber show -  a lot of it was on the Pirates set,' Thwaites said.

However, Thwaites was full of praise for his co-star, revealing that working with the Donnie Brasco star was a pleasure.

'Johnny Depp is just a f***ing star in it [Pirates] – he’s so good,' Thwaites said.

'And he’s such a sweet guy. So good to fans, he was great to me. He was great to everyone on the set.'

In June 2022, Depp was awarded $10.35million in a verdict delivered after his legal team successfully argued that Heard's Washington Post op-ed, in which she accused her ex-husband of domestic abuse, was defamatory.

'Now I know "oh, that’s why maybe Johnny wasn’t coming to work" or "that’s why I was sitting around learning flamenco for 12 and a half hours by my trailer waiting for people to come to work",' he told the publication, referring to Depp's acrimonious relationship with Heard

Heard did not name Depp publicly in the piece but given their status and notoriety, it was evident who she was referencing in regard to her history of being allegedly abused.

More than 500 million people reportedly livestreamed the six-week civil defamation trial which was held at Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia in 2022.

Heard was eventually found liable in all three matters of defamation raised, while Depp was only found liable in one of three matters of defamation raised.

The jury determined that Depp's attorney had defamed Heard with a statement he made claiming she and her friends had fabricated evidence about a fight between her and her ex-husband in 2016.

She was awarded $2 million in damages. Eventually, the former couple reached a settlement on the jury awards, and Heard was only forced to pay Depp $1 million in total.

Since the trial wrapped up, Heard has moved to Spain after selling her home in Yucca Valley, California, for $1.1.

Depp and Heard were only married for 15 months before their acrimonious $7 million divorce in 2017.

The former lovebirds met on the set of The Rum Diary back in 2011, married four years later - but split in May 2016 amid a slew of shuddering domestic violence allegations and tabloid headlines.

They looked to have put their feud behind them after agreeing to a $7m divorce settlement until Heard wrote in December 2018 that she was a domestic violence ‘survivor’.

Since his turn opposite Depp, Thwaites, a former Home and Away star, has gone on to star in such big screen fare as Office Uprising and An InTerview With God.

His latest offering is the Binge Christmas film How To Make Gravy, based on the iconig Paul Kelly song of the same name.
