Few recent anime series have been so culturally significant as Attack on Titan. The anime adaptation of Hajime Isayama's manga spearheaded a new era of explosive popularity for the medium, one whose shock waves are still shaping the world of entertainment today. When the series ended in 2023 (two years after the manga had concluded), the debate began. The controversial conclusion to Eren's story remains a hot topic today, and now fans will have a new chance to experience it on the big screen, this time in 4K quality.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack will be screened in North American theaters on May 18 as part of Crunchyroll's Anime Nights initiative. This is the series' fifth compilation movie, collecting the episodes originally aired as parts 3 and 4 of the anime's fourth and final season. The movie begins shortly after Eren has unleashed the Rumbling, a genocidal attack that will destroy most of the world outside of Paradis Island. It details the efforts of Eren's former companions to stop the catastrophe and their old friend, bringing the story to its emotional conclusion.

Eren's turn into a villain in the series' final part is still highly controversial. Recently, Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama expressed some regret over the portrayal of his protagonist. While Isayama stuck with his early idea of Eren becoming a genocidal villain until the end, he admits not fully committing to that villainous portrayal, resulting in "a sense of insincerity in the story's conclusion." Still, there's no denying that the author's strong commitment to his vision of the story created a powerful tale that will resonate with fans for many years to come.

If you already watched the episode version of Attack on Titan's finale, there is still a reason to go check out The Last Attack in theaters besides the 4K treatment. The movie includes an additional scene at the end, showing Erin, Mikasa, and Armin as "normal" kids who just came out of a movie theater where they watched The Last Attack. They discuss the ending just like real fans do, providing a much more heartwarming finale for the series.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack will hit North American theaters on May 18. Tickers are available from Fandango (United States) and Cineplex (Canada).
