Are Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts characters finally going to join Astro Bot?

5 days ago 3

The new Astro Bot Winter Wonder update added Gex to the game’s huge collection of cameo characters. While this may seem insignificant at first, his appearance may be our first hint that Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and other Square Enix properties are going to join this wonderful adventure very soon.

Since it currently owns the Gex series, Square Enix acknowledged Astro Bot on its official social media accounts for the first time since the game’s initial release. This is particularly intriguing, because Astro Bot lacks any cameos of characters from Square’s biggest IPs, like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, or Dragon Quest, and gamers have been asking Team ASOBI to add them in for months.

And now, not only has Square Enix celebrated Gex’s inclusion, but Team ASOBI even responded by thanking it for “joining the celebration”. Naturally, this interaction has excited fans of the game all over social media and fueled their speculation because, if Gex is in Astro Bot, now any character from other iconic Square franchises could easily join the game as well.

Needless to say, Final Fantasy is one of the most important and influential JRPG franchises in the industry, and it has made a huge impact on the PlayStation brand since the release of Final Fantasy VII on the PS1 back in 1997. The only question is: Which Final Fantasy characters should Team ASOBI add to the game?

Which Final Fantasy characters will join Astro Bot in the future?

While there are a lot of different characters to choose from, we can confidently predict that Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, Tifa Lockhart, and Aerith Gainsborough from FFVII most likely are some of the very first Final Fantasy icons that will join Astro Bot in the near future. However, other beloved characters – like Final Fantasy X‘s Tidus or Final Fantasy XVI‘s Clive Rosfield – would be worthwhile additions as well.

On the other hand, there is Sora, the main protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series, who was yet another glaring omission from Astro Bot‘s initial roster of cameos. This one is a little bit more tricky since he is owned by Disney and not Square Enix, but Team ASOBI could still make it work.

For example, the recent Winter Wonder update added two Spider-Man cameos: Peter Parker and Miles Morales, characters that many people thought were going to be almost impossible to add to the game. So, if they could make it in, surely Square and Team ASOBI can find a way to add Sora as well. Of course, while other original Kingdom Hearts may accompany him, it’s highly unlikely that Disney would approve of the inclusion of its classic characters, like Donald, Goofy, or Mickey.

But Square Enix is not just about Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts: this company also owns other beloved and iconic gaming franchises that should make their way into Astro Bot via character cameos. Some obvious examples include: the Heroes from the Dragon Quest series, 2B and 9S from NieR: Automata, any protagonist from the Mana series and Soa from Foamstars. Astro Bot is a celebration of the entire video game industry, and now it’s time for Square Enix to finally join the party.
