Apple TV’s New Star-Studded Sci-Fi Thriller Adaptation Gets Major Production Update From Liminal Director

In March 2026, Apple TV announced a sci-fi action-thriller currently titled Liminal, which would be based on the 2022 graphic novel Telepaths by J. Michael Straczynski. Details about the film, directed by The Last House and The Incredible Hulk's Louis Leterrier, have been kept largely under wraps outside the confirmed casting of Vanessa Kirby, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Tom Pelphrey, Franka Potente, Tracy Letts, Paul Sparks, and Ava Threat. However, Leterrier has now given the upcoming Apple TV sci-fi its biggest update yet.

During a Q&A hosted by Collider's Steve Weintraub for Netflix's sci-fi thriller The Last House in New York City on August 4, at which ScreenRant was in attendance, director Louis Leterrier revealed that he had finished filming his last scene for Liminal that day. In addition to confirming wrapping filming for Liminal, Leterrier confirmed that it will be his next film release after The Last House, while also teasing the stacked cast and "interesting" sci-fi elements:

Louis Leterrier: "I shot the last scene of my next movie today. Somebody died. It's Liminal, it's for Apple TV, it's with Vanessa Kirby, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Tom Pelphrey, Tracy Letts, Franka Potente... It's pretty cool, it's sci-fi. Very interesting sci-fi."

Production on Liminal began in May 2026 in New York City, bringing together several hit sci-fi action movie stars like The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Vanessa Kirby, The Matrix Resurrections' Yahya-Abdul Mateen, and Outer Range's Tom Pelphrey. Currently, Apple TV has yet to announce a release date or window for Liminal, but the film isn't expected to debut until 2027.

Though Apple TV is well-renowned for its sci-fi prowess, Liminal is the only movie in this genre confirmed for the studio's upcoming slate, with the majority of its current sci-fi pursuits being on the TV format. On the series front, Apple TV's upcoming sci-fi releases include Silo season 4, Severance season 3, Murderbot season 2, Foundation season 4, For All Mankind season 6, Dark Matter season 2, Neuromancer season 1, a Monarch: Legacy of Monsters spinoff, and Pluribus season 2.

Liminal now joins a small list of sci-fi movie pursuits from Apple TV, following successful outings such as the Tom Hanks-led Finch in 2021 and Anya Taylor-Joy's streaming smash The Gorge in 2025. Meanwhile, the studio's next biggest film releases fall under the action umbrella, with Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, and Matchbox: The Movie, led by John Cena, arriving in September and October 2026, respectively.

With production having just concluded, Apple TV has yet to confirm whether Louis Leterrier's Liminal will receive a theatrical release or premiere exclusively on streaming. While the Apple Original Films projects The Lost Bus, F1, and Eternity debuted in theaters in 2025 prior to streaming on Apple TV, other recent blockbuster-style movies like The Gorge, Guy Ritchie's Fountain of Youth, Outcome, Mayday, and Matchbox were designated streaming-only releases.

That said, Leterrier is no stranger to successful box office runs if Apple TV opts to release Liminal in theaters, with the director having helmed the $493 million-earning Clash of the Titans, $351 million franchise-launching Now You See Me, and the $714 million-earning Fast X. Meanwhile, Leterrier is also set to direct the highly anticipated Fast Forever, which is slated to be the final film in the Fast & Furious franchise.
