Apple TV’s Hit Space Opera Hits Major Filming Milestone As It Targets 2027 Return

Based on the Isaac Asimov stories and debuting relatively early in the history of Apple TV, the sprawling adaptation has established itself as a defining sci-fi drama for the streamer. But viewers will be heading into Foundation season 4 with a notable change. Series co-creator and executive producer David S. Goyer is stepping down from his role as showrunner, with the duo of Ian B. Goldberg and David Kob taking over the position.

Goyer explained in interviews that his reasons for stepping away from Foundation came down to the production keeping him away from his family for long stretches and likewise cited how a smaller budget impacted his vision for the series. The cast and crew had been filming in Prague since the beginning of 2026. But that is finally a closed chapter.

As part of Variety's feature on Foundation star Lee Pace, timed with his role in Practical Magic 2, which is now in theaters, it's briefly mentioned that Pace, who has played a handful of players in the Apple TV drama, wrapped filming in July and that Foundation season 4 is eying a 2027 release date.

The Foundation cast posted photos of the production wrap in July. But as of now, Apple TV has yet to officially comment on any release window. That will likely happen in the new year, if the release window is right, as promotional materials and previews begin to trickle out.

Pace reveals that three-time Emmy winner Cherry Jones will be back as part of the ensemble in her seven-episode recurring role as Ambassador Quent. It's a continuing trend for the veteran performer, in any case, who has done guest turns on shows such as Succession, Hacks, Black Mirror, and The Handmaid's Tale, and has tended to be an absolute scene-stealer. That has been very much the case in her relatively limited appearances as Quent, as well.

As for what awaits Pace after the events of Foundation season 3, viewers last saw his character getting killed by Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann). But as is the case with the interconnected sci-fi, that isn't the end of Pace's presence in the story. The larger question now turns to narrowing down that 2027 window. Perhaps more pressingly, as well, there's also the question of how the new pair of showrunners will choose to evolve the narrative.

Foundation is available to stream on Apple TV.
