Game of Thrones has entered a new era with HBO's newest spinoff series, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, expanding the live-action adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe in bold new directions. House of the Dragon's most recent season was one for the record books, despite landing somewhat controversially among longtime Fire & Blood readers who felt the changes to Martin's source material didn't land.

However, there's no denying the House of the Dragon show-runners' ability to bring Martin's characters to life on screen in fascinating ways, from Paddy Considine's heartbreaking portrayal of Viserys Targaryen to Olivia Cooke's deeply conflicted Alicent Hightower to Tom Glynn-Carney's perfect depiction of Aegon II.

Even relatively minor characters from the books have been transformed in interesting ways, sometimes with little source material to work from. Few examples demonstrate that better than Season 1's terrifying Craghas Drahar, better known as the Crabfeeder, who will make an epic return thanks to the new Lords of the Tide release coming later this month.

Lords of the Tide is part of a massive new faction update in Game of Thrones: Legends that has completely reworked the game's core systems and restructured Legendary Champions into more appropriate groupings across the board. The Lords of the Tide faction will take the place of the currently available Greyjoy faction later this month, and includes several iconic characters from both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, including:

  • Corlys Velaryon
  • Laenor Velaryon
  • Seasmoke
  • Craghas Drahar (aka The Crabfeeder)
  • Davos Seaworth (Hand Of Stannis)

Lords of the Tide Champions are those in Legends that fall under the "seafarer" category and will maintain the Greyjoy style of gameplay, "relying on combos and RAID to deal massive damage and heal when they defeat enemies." The broader faction update will introduce multiple new similar faction restructurings, including the Free Folk into Beyond the Wall, the Boltons into Way of Whispers, and the Brotherhood of the Banners into the Scattered Banners.

Further, Legends is introducing an entirely new faction, The Sun's Dominion, which will feature several characters in the southern regions of Westeros outside the Stormlands.

The main reason for the overhaul is to make every faction more appealing and easier to support long-term. According to Zynga, several of Legends' smaller groups suffer from a lack of depth, while less recognizable Champions tend to attract less interest than major characters. Champions without a faction have also proven less popular, particularly among newer players who use faction groupings to understand team synergies.

By broadening these categories, the developers want every Champion to belong somewhere while ensuring each faction has enough recognizable "star power" to remain viable for future releases. According to the update, no Champion can belong to more than two factions at once, and existing Champions won't lose any current faction affiliations, preventing established team compositions from being disrupted.

Overall, it's an exciting reinvention of the classic gameplay formula that returning Game of Thrones: Legends players are looking forward to, and one that will make the experience much more streamlined and accessible to new players just joining the adventure.
