Aperty, the portrait editor from Skylum, will be discontinued November 4th. We reviewed Aperty in 2024 and found it a capable editor for portrait photographers. Using a mix of the usual develop sliders and some AI, I had heard positive reviews from people who purchased it.
In a note to users, a Skylum spokesman said:
As a company putting photographers first, we want to build products that bring joy to photography and editing, not just do the job well. We are closing Aperty to focus on Luminar, our flagship product, enhancing it with new features and technologies that will help photographers release their creative vision to the world. Luminar already integrates Aperty’s portrait-editing capabilities, and we are committed to improving it even further, so it eventually becomes an ultimate editing tool for photographers of every kind.
It appears the app will continue to function, but I would not expect updates to appear. Skylum emphasizes that Aperty's portrait-editing functionality is already integrated into Luminar, and frankly, Luminar has some pretty powerful portrait tools now, like face slimming, lighting, complexion adjustments, and more.
Aperty launched with a one-year subscription priced at $299, while an early preorder lifetime license was offered for $249. Prices have gone up and down with special deals and short-lived promotions. I've asked Skylum how those customers will be compensated but don't have an answer yet.
Skylum is a very creative company and is doing some wonderful work under tremendous pressure creating software from its home in Ukraine, but as a longtime observer, products come and go too often, leaving customers stranded. Products are dropped, and names change with a dizzying regularity. And yet, they have pushed the world of photo editors forward with some amazing developments that have influenced Adobe and others.
Aperty customers should watch for communications from Skylum on the state of play going forward.
