Anya Taylor-Joy has earned a new spotlight for a streaming success story.
Taylor-Joy's adaptation that scored over $1.3 billion at the box office officially tops streaming charts before the franchise's return this year. Taylor-Joy's movies range in genre, from small-budget horror fare like The Witch, the big-budget films like Dune: Part Two and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But there's one which stands above the rest in her career.
Her standout film is The Super Maro Bros. Movie, a 2023 adaptation of the video game series of the same name. In the movie, Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom, who, alongside Mario (Chris Pratt), goes in search of his brother, Luigi (Charlie Day), who's been kidnapped by the Koopa King Bowser (Jack Black).
Now, FlixPatrol has confirmed The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the Number 1 film in the United States on Peacock. The movie has knocked Black Phone 2 off its previous reign on top of the streaming platform. This comes just ahead of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel that's due to release in theaters April 1, 2026.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a record-breaking success, both for Taylor-Joy and for video game adaptations in general. As of writing, it's the Guinness World Record holder for highest-grossing movie based on a video game, having earned $1.361 billion at the global box office against a $100 million budget. It's also the second-highest-grossing animated movie ever.
The film's placement on Peacock is a sudden surprise, with the film having moved streaming services as part of an overall deal with Universal and Netflix. It was originally on Peacock from August to December 2023, before moving to Netflix until October 2024. It now remain on Peacock, with no plans to alter its current at-home release location.
Taylor-Joy's Peach is one of the more nuanced Super Mario Bros. Movie characters, with some controversy surrounding her portrayal as contrasted with her video game counterpart. However, the film was a massive financial success for Illumination, something that's anticipated to carry over into the forthcoming sequel movie.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie earning such high interest on Peacock two months before its sequel, the movie is poised to keep making waves on streaming ahead of the next installment. The Taylor-Joy-led film will likely continue uncontested as a top contender on the platform, something that could continue until the sequel arrives in theaters.
