Anthony Starr may play a pivotal figure in The Boys, but there is one fellow cast member he envies when it comes to storylines.
Starr has played Homelander, the iconic twisted leader at the center of The Boys, since the Eric Kripke show's inception in 2019. Homelander is surrounded by an eclectic cast of characters, including Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie (Jack Quaid), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), The Deep (Chace Crawford), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell).
In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, the person at the root of Starr's envy is revealed: Crawford, who plays The Deep. In Crawford's interview, he revealed that Starr is a little jealous of The Deep's plot lines season after season, saying, "Every year, you've got some really good stuff, man." Check out the full quote from Crawford below:
Chace Crawford: I walked onto that set, and I was like, "Oh my God, this is amazing." The periscope and the posters on the wall were ridiculous. And the fact that he's driving a cyber truck? They surprise me every time, and I don't know why I'm surprised, but it's always something so funny.
Even Antony, every year, is like, "Dude, you have some of the best s--t all the time! Every year, you've got some really good stuff, man." It's fun. Kripke pitched us our arc this year, and I just thought it was so funny. The podcast stuff was a lot of fun, and people are really responding to it, too. They think it's hilarious. Having Black Noir just pushing buttons over there was so funny. I'm going to miss it! I'm going to miss opening those scripts up every season and seeing the storylines.
The Deep definitely had some major flaws throughout The Boys' run. In the series premiere, he commits sexual harassment and implied assault (further confirmed in season 3) against Starlight, one of the new recruits to The Seven. Not only does this lead to tension between Starlight and the Deep, but she eventually goes public with her story.
This eventually leads The Deep to be kicked out of The Seven, who support Starlight and think the news will sully their reputation. He stays relevant to the show and is eventually brought back into the main Supe group by Homelander.
Despite the very serious nature of his early days, Crawford's character is given plenty of absurd and at times over-the-top funny moments in The Boys. Among the various NSFW exploits in the iconic The Boys season 3 episode "Herogasm,"The Deep is revealed to have a sexual relationship with an octopus.
In The Boys season 5, The Deep gets back to his goofy shenanigans that largely disregard the character's darker, more serious past. Leaning into the character's arrogant, rich persona, Kripke has him "driving a cyber truck," putting the oft-mocked real-life Tesla vehicle into the show's fictional world.
Crawford adds that the Deep has also been able to have some hilarious relationships with other characters throughout the show's tenure. This season, he and Black Noir are a dynamic duo, most notable as co-hosts of the in-universe podcast "Manhandled." This is undoubtedly one arc that Crawford found "so funny" when Kripke pitched The Boys season 5.
With three episodes left, there is still ample time for viewers to see Homelander's character arc grow. Starr may wish he were Crawford in some seasons, but viewers will just have to wait and see whose story comes out on top as The Boys season 5 reaches its conclusion.
