Anthropic just made its AI assistant a permanent resident of the Microsoft Office suite. Claude add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word are now generally available, while Claude for Outlook has entered public beta.
What the integrations actually do
The Claude add-ins sit directly inside Microsoft’s Office applications, meaning users don’t need to copy-paste content between Claude’s web interface and their spreadsheets or slide decks. In Excel, Claude can help analyze data, suggest formulas, and interpret complex spreadsheets. In PowerPoint, it can assist with slide creation and content structuring. In Word, it handles drafting, editing, and formatting tasks inline.
The Outlook integration, still in public beta, can help with email triage, drafting replies, and scheduling meetings.
These integrations are built on Microsoft’s Connector Platform, commonly known as MCP. Pre-built MCP connectors allow Claude to query documents stored in SharePoint and OneDrive, as well as Outlook emails. This cross-application access is available across all Claude plans and accessible through the Microsoft Marketplace.
Security-wise, Anthropic says credentials are stored locally in browser sandboxes, kept separate from the company’s own servers.
The broader Microsoft-Anthropic relationship
Claude models, including Sonnet 4.5, Haiku 4.5, and Opus 4.1, have been integrated into Microsoft Foundry since November 18, 2025. They are available for Azure billing, which means enterprise customers can run Claude through their existing Microsoft cloud accounts rather than managing a separate vendor relationship.
The integration also extends to Microsoft 365 Copilot, where Claude powers certain agent functionalities within Copilot.
Third-party platforms like Zapier have also gotten in on the action, enabling no-code workflows that connect Office 365 actions to Claude functionalities. This means non-technical users can set up automated pipelines without writing a single line of code.
