Anne Hathaway's Dramatic Oscars 2026 Gown Is, Indeed, Groundbreaking

Anne Hathaway's Transformation for ‘Mother Mary’ Role Will Make You Do a Double Take

Anne Hathaway knows a thing or two about rocking florals for spring.

Indeed, The Devil Wears Prada star turned heads with her springtime chic look at the 2026 Oscars on March 15.

On the red carpet, Anne—who is presenting at the award show alongside host Conan O’Brien, Zendaya, Paul Mescal, Gwyneth Paltrow and more—wore a black, strapless Valentino gown with floral embellishments. The dress was cinched at the waist with a large black belt and flared out towards the bottom with a long train.

The actress completed her look with a pair of black opera gloves, Bvlgari diamond earrings and a striking Bvlgari diamond necklace.

Though Anne has always explored stunning fabrics on the red carpet, she’s also extended that curiosity to her acting career over the last year. Not only is she returning to her high fashion roots in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which will release in May, but she debuted a rather dramatic makeover for her pop star role in Mother Mary.

In the upcoming David Lowery film’s trailer, Anne sported various blonde hairstyles to transform into the titular character. She started with a long middle part, which let her black honey piece highlights shine through, before changing into a wet messy bob.

However, this platinum hue wasn’t the only change that came with her character. In fact, the Interstellar alum admitted she had to switch up her acting technique in order to learn Mother Mary’s musical flaws.

“I had to learn,” Anne—mom to sons Jonathan, 9, and Jack, 5, with husband Adam Shulman—told Vogue last July. “Because if I’d had the music a year before we ever turned a camera on, I would have tattooed every note of it on my soul. There would have been a whole process, very specific, and that was not available to me in the end. I am very grateful I could not take control.

But in that absence, it seems the script’s heavy material took a toll on her and her castmates, including Michaela Coel. Indeed, David revealed the costars nearly broke down while filming a pivotal scene.

“It felt like shooting Apocalypse Now,” he explained to Vogue. “At one point, Annie broke down and said, ‘I have to apologize, because I think what’s going to come out of me will hurt you.’ And Michaela took her hands and said, ‘I love you, I trust you.’”
