Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in Maria (6)

Angelina Jolie has been a celebrated actor for a number of years. She is famous for both her on and off-screen life, as she was in a high-profile relationship with actor and former Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Brad Pitt for over a decade. Prior to this, Jolie was also known for winning Best Supporting Actress for her acclaimed role in Girl, Interrupted. She was also later nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for the stirring family drama Changeling.

While she had a peak period in the 2000s, Jolie's career has slowed down a bit in recent years. In 2021, she made her MCU movie playing Thena in Eternals, but then did not act in any projects in 2022 or 2023. Her career also saw other feature film gaps. For example, the actor had another three-year gap between her 2016 voice acting role in Kung Fu Panda 3 and her starring role in the sequel film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Jolie is back this year in 2024, and her recent film has just seen some major success.

Maria Has Become A Success On Netflix

Maria Has Done Well With Critics

Maria is now a streaming success. In the biopic, Jolie plays the eponymous Maria Callas, a world renowned opera singer who is living out the end of her life in the 1970s in Paris. Maria is receiving fairly positive reviews thus far after originally premiering at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024. The movie earned Jolie a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, and has earned Oscar buzz. In addition to Jolie, Maria features a leading cast including Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Haluk Bilginer, and Casper Phillipson.

Our Take On Maria's Netflix Success

Maria Could Continue To Get Awards Momentum

Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in Maria

While it did not quite top the list, Maria saw fairly instant Netflix success, as it just got added to Netflix yesterday, December 11. Its quick place on the Netflix list is probably directly correlated to the recent momentum it received when Jolie's Golden Globe nomination was announced on December 9. Nonetheless, its streaming success is a good sign that Maria could continue its momentum throughout the awards season, and potentially see Jolie's name appear on the list of Best Actresses when the Oscar nominations are announced in January.
