An Oscars 2026 Tie? Breaking Down the Rare Win in the Best Live Action Short Film Category

This is one category that definitely saw some action.

The 2026 Oscars cemented itself in history on March 15, as it marks the seventh time ever that an award saw two winners.

During the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre, presenter Kumail Nanjiani was shocked to announced that two films would take home the gold in the Best Live Action Short Film category:The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva. (See all winners here).

“It’s a tie," the Silicon Valley alum noted. "I’m not joking. It’s actually a tie. So everyone calm down. We’re gonna get through this. Focus up.”

Prior to this year's win, the last time the Academy Awards saw a tie was in 2013, when both Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty took home the prize for Sound Editing, but the arguably the most unforgettable would be when Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand—who each won for The Lion in Winter and Funny Girl, respectively—tied for Best Actress in 1969.

For The Singers, filmmakers Jack Piatt and Sam A. Davis went onstage first to grab their trophy and shortly thereafter, Two People Exchanging Saliva's Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata followed behind and accepted their award.

“We believe art can change people’s souls," Alexandre said. "Maybe it takes 10 years time, but we can change society through art, through creativity," he added, referencing Timothée Chalamet's recent comments, "through theater and ballet—and cinema.”

And as for Natalie, she added, “Thank you to the Academy for supporting a film that is weird and queer and made by a majority of women."

After announcing the winners, Kumail quipped of the record-breaking moment, “Ironic that the short film Oscar is going to take twice as long."
