Carolyn Jenkins is a voracious consumer of film and television. She graduated from Long Island University with an MFA in Screenwriting and Producing where she learned the art of character, plot, and structure. The best teacher is absorbing media and she spends her time reading about different worlds from teen angst to the universe of Stephen King.
2026’s Academy Awards were a largely predictable ceremony with one surprise. While One Battle After Another and Sinners cleaned up with the accolades, Weapons squeaked out a highly deserved award for Amy Madigan following her astounding performance in Zach Cregger’s horror film. Weapons did not have as many sweeping nominations as the others. Despite being the David against the Goliaths of bigger budget films, Madigan earned her award as the harrowing villain, Aunt Gladys. Unsettling in appearance as well as her actions, Madigan's performance had no equal as the parasitic witch feeding on the youth.
It has been 40 years since Madigan’s previous nomination, but far from the last time she made an impression. The Weapons actor has made a killing in film and television for decades, particularly in a short-lived role in a beloved sci-fi series. J.J. Abrams’ follow-up to the definitive sci-fi series Lost was arguably better conceived, though admittedly not as popular. Fringe lasted for five seasons on Fox and featured some of Madigan’s most underrated work.
Amy Madigan Was a Heartbreaking Interlude in Olivia’s Story
Over a decade before Amy Madigan’s Oscar win for Weapons, she appeared as another heart-wrenching maternal figure, though perhaps not as horrifying. Her character sneaked in and packed a punch into Olivia Dunham’s (Anna Torv) plot development in an unexpected way. Since its premiere in 2008, Fringe has had no bad episodes as its characters investigated cases revolving around the paranormal. FBI Agent Olivia Dunham discovers a found family with the Bishops as they investigate the realities of fringe science. The stakes get even higher when Olivia gets trapped in an alternate dimension where things are only slightly different. As shown in some of the best episodes now on streaming, Walter Bishop's (John Noble) meddling leads the alternate universe to conclude that the two worlds must come to a head.
To do so, the alternate Walter devises a plan to brainwash Olivia Prime into believing she is Fauxlivia and switches their places. While Olivia is at first confident that she doesn’t belong in that dimension, Walternate hammers away at her psyche until she reaches a breaking point. The final straw for her sanity was speaking to her mother, Marilyn, played by Madigan, who did not phone in the performance.
Olivia is devastated to see that while her mother died when she was 14, Fauxlivia’s mother was still in her life and had a close relationship with her daughter. Marilyn was the emotional tie that ultimately convinces Olivia that she belongs in the wrong universe. This was particularly cunning on Walternate’s part as he schemed to brainwash Olivia entirely. Olivia’s desperation to have a connection with someone she hadn’t seen in a decade and a half was particularly excruciating because Marilyn had no idea how she factored into this plot. All Marilyn wanted to do was comfort her daughter, whom she perceived to be having some sort of nervous breakdown. The two characters connect in an emotional scene with horrifying consequences. For a moment, Olivia can have her mother back, even though it isn’t real. It is the push that finally breaks her, sending her into complete delusion.
Madigan portrays the exact sort of maternal figure that is needed in the sequence. Though Marilyn is a far cry from the insidious Gladys character, Fringe shows Madigan’s range and her ability to tap deeply into visceral feelings between a parental figure and a child. Fringe was just the precursor to one of her most transformative roles to date.
