The witches from American Horror Story’s third season, subtitled Coven, have popped up multiple times in the show since their initial appearance. Queenie returned to the show’s fifth season for an episode, Myrtle returned for an episode of the show’s spinoff, American Horror Stories, and most of the witches returned for the show’s eighth season. The popular characters show no sign of putting a stop to their appearances, as Ryan Murphy has announced that the witches will return to the show at a later date. As for what roles they'll have, that remains to be seen.
American Horror Story: Apocalypse offered a different plotline for the witches, compared to their first season, which was great to see. Apocalypse saw the witches fight against the Antichrist to save the world from an apocalypse. Every witch apart from the soulless Jessica Lange’s Fiona Goode was able to make a re-appearance in the season. But despite their popularity, the show would need a new story and a viable reason to make sense of the return of the witches. It wouldn’t do them justice for them to appear just to keep a tradition alive.

All The Witches Are Where They Need To Be
American Horror Story: Apocalypse gave the witches the ending they deserved that they didn’t get from Coven. A lot of the characters were killed by the end of the third season, such as Madison, Nan, Myrtle, and Misty. These characters were given a second chance in Apocalypse, with Misty being given another chance at life, Madison was brought back to be the hero, and Myrtle came back to help her sisters. Even Nan made a reappearance, showing that she is happy in the afterlife. All the unfair endings from Coven were reversed, and the characters finally got what they deserved.
Mallory will take over when the time comes.
Apocalypse also carried on the story of the coven and the mythology of the witches. One of the ways this was done was by introducing Mallory, the next supreme of the coven. Even though Cordelia is alive and well and running the coven, her time is running out, meaning Mallory will take over when the time comes. In a way, this is a good sign for their future, as it means the coven will be kept in safe hands. The downside to that though, is that it means when the witches come back, the audience already knows who the next supreme is, taking away from the mystery.
If The Coven Witches Are To Return In AHS, They Need A Fresh New Story
They Can't Just Retell The Same Stories That Have Already Been Told
The end of Apocalypse saw a new Antichrist being born and recruited by the church of Satan. This means that the witches will be needed yet again to defeat him and save the world from another apocalypse. Although there is already a story set up for their return the witches have already fought an Antichrist and won. If they were to do it again, such a story would become repetitive and predictable, and no one would watch the show. It’s imperative for the witches to face up against a new challenge rather than something that’s been seen on the show before.

Ignoring the end of American Horror Story: Apocalypse could prove a challenge for the creative team of the show as it is a canon event that has happened in the show. But it is a necessity for the show to remain new and fresh. The charm of American Horror Story is that every season tells a different story. This is why the witches would need to be up against a new challenge, as it would make no sense for the characters of the show to have them re-tell the same story they told in season 8.
