EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studios is developing Playing the Field, a series based on the USA Today sports romance novel Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner.
Sarah Tapscott will serve as the project’s showrunner, executive producer and writer. Other executive producers include Jeff Wachtel and Jared Berenholz for Future Shack Entertainment, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe for A Touch More, Camille Bernier-Green, Emily Rasenick, and Wilsner.
Playing the Field is an ensemble comedy following the sexy, messy, and exciting lives of four female players on Crescent City, a professional New Orleans women’s soccer team, anchored by the will-they-won’t-they romance of newly drafted phenom Phoebe Matthews and team captain Grace Henderson.
Macmillan published the novel in September 2023.
Tapscott is currently a co-executive producer on the upcoming Hulu/WBTV project Not Suitable For Work. Before that, she was a co-EP on The Sex Lives of College Girls and The Big Leap. While under a deal at 20th Century Fox, she worked on New Girl, Single Parents, and Life in Pieces, and developed multiple scripts. She is represented by UTA and Ken Richman at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
A bestselling author of contemporary romances featuring queer folks who love women, Wilsner’s other books include Something to Talk About, Mistakes Were Made, and USA Today bestseller My Best Friend’s Honeymoon. They are repped for film & TV rights by Katherine Curtis of New Leaf Literary & Media, and for all other rights by Patrice Caldwell of The Caldwell Agency.
