His skills as a gamer are soon tested when a disastrous meteor strike sends him and his closest friends to a mysterious purgatory: the eponymous Borderland. What first seems like a typical apocalyptic wasteland quickly transforms into something much more sinister, as the survivors must earn their stay in Borderland by playing games drawn from a deck of cards— and losing comes with a fatal punishment.

Alice in Borderland's death games comprise the infamous hook that has captivated viewers since the show's 2020 premiere, but the survival horror story has plenty of other intriguing characteristics. Each character introduced in Alice in Borderland serves a different purpose related to the familiar Alice in Wonderland ensemble, from a White Rabbit that leads the way to a Mad Hatter that wreaks havoc and thrives upon the chaos he causes. While the first season put it on the map, Alice in Borderland's second season was even better. After establishing the harrowing rules of Borderland and the card-based caste system it follows, Alice in Borderland season 2 pits Arisu and his closest ally Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) against the literal faces of evil that rule over the liminal space. The face cards each pose a unique challenge to the citizens of Borderland, from the King of Spades' ruthless manhunt to the Queen of Hearts' unsettling mind games.

Alice in Borderland is a one-of-a-kind series that everyone should see at least once, but it isn't a quick watch. There are countless short and sweet Netflix shows you can finish in one night, but Alice in Borderland requires more of an investment. There are 22 episodes in total across the thriller's three seasons, and with episode lengths running 41–80 minutes, it's more intensive than your average weekend binge.

Each playing card suit in Alice in Borderland corresponds to a different challenge, with spades testing players' physical strength, hearts testing their emotional fortitude, clubs testing their teamwork skills, and diamonds testing their logic.

Nevertheless, Alice in Borderland is an endlessly rewarding watch, and it deserves more mainstream attention. There's a reason survival stories like Squid Game and The Hunger Games persist years after their release, and Alice in Borderland deserves to be kept in the same conversation as the greats. Furthermore, even at its lowest, Alice in Borderland is still better than any other sci-fi thriller on Netflix.
