The Osmonds are mourning the loss of one of their own.

Alan Osmond, the eldest member of the Utah-born 1970s barbershop quartet, died in the evening of April 20, his family confirmed. He was 76.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of my beloved brother, Alan Osmond,” Merrill Osmond, 72, wrote in a statement obtained by People. “I was grateful to be with him shortly before he passed and to share a final meaningful moment together. Alan was a gifted creator, a man of faith, and a deeply loving soul whose life blessed many.”

Born to George Osmond and Olive Osmond in 1949, Alan was formerly the eldest in the music group also comprised of brothers Merrill, Jay Osmond, 71 and Wayne Osmond, who died last year at 73.

Later, brothers Donny Osmond, 68, and Jimmy Osmond, 63, also joined the group as they evolved their sound. (The Osmond siblings also include Virl Osmond, 80, Tom Osmond, 78 and Marie Osmond, 68, though they did not perform in the family band.)

The Osmonds were a prominent part of pop culture from 1971 to 1975 and transitioned into a country sound in the 1980s, however, Alan retreated from the public eye in 1987 after receiving a multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

In his final days, Merrill detailed how Alan honored their family’s musical legacy.

“In a tender moment I will never forget, he leaned close and whispered something into my ear. He said, ‘Merrill, you and I worked side by side,’” Merill wrote in a separate tribute on Facebook. “‘We created, we produced, we directed… we gave our hearts to The Plan with Wayne. Please… do something with it. Let people know what we were trying to say.’ I want you to know, his request will be honored.”

In addition to his music career, Alan was a family man. He shared eight sons with wife of over 50 years Suzanne Pinegar Osmond, as well as 30 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, according to KUTV

Beyond his musical talents, Merrill emphasized the impact his brother had on everyone around him in his tribute.

“His life was not measured in years, but in love, sacrifice, and purpose,” he continued in his Facebook post. “His creativity, his vision, and his deep understanding of the Savior’s teachings were simply part of who he was. He lived it. He felt it. He shared it. He wanted me to tell you how much he loved you, and I believe that with all my heart.”
