As production is underway on the Jason Momoa and Andy Samberg-led Netflix film Protecting Jared in Oahu, Aimee Carrero (Your Friends and Neighbors, The Menu) and Jai Courtney (American Primeval, War Machine) have joined the cast.
Additionally, Ruben Fleischer has been added as the film’s director. His directing credits include the films Zombieland (2009), Venom (2018), and most recently, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. For the small screen, he’s directed episodes of NBC’s Superstore, ABC’s Stumptown, Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet, and ABC’s The Good Doctor.
Fleischer will direct from a script written by the mulitple Emmy nominated duo of Rob Klein and John Solomon, both of whom are longtime comedy writers. Klein and Solomon coincided as writers on NBC’s Saturday Night Live for 16 years. Solomon also wrote on Peacock’s MacGruber, Fox’s The Last Man on Earth, and NBC’s A.P. Bio, the last of which Klein also wrote for.
Details about the two-hander action comedy are being kept under wraps, but it will be an action comedy set in Hawaii. Character names and descriptions for Carrero and Courtney are also under wraps.
Producers include Samberg’s Party Over Here and Momoa’s On The Roam.
Courtney will next be seen in Paramount +’s The Dutton Ranch, a spin-off of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, as the imposing and unpredictable ranch foreman, Rob-Will. Most recently, he played Virgil Cutter in the Netflix limited series American Primeval. In 2022, Jai starred in Prime Video’s action thriller series The Terminal List alongside Chris Pratt.
On the film side, Courtney was seen in Netflix’s War Machine, which premiered this month and hit the streamer’s Top 10. Before that, he starred in IFC Films’ Dangerous Animals, which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. He will next be seen in The Fox, which premiered at the 2026 SXSW Film Festival, following its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival. In 2021, Courtney reprised his role of Captain Boomerang in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad for DC Comics and Warner Bros. and starred in the action-comedy Jolt for Millennium Films opposite Kate Beckinsale. He is represented by UTA, Morrisey Management.
Carrero will next shoot the third season of the hit Jonathan Tropper’s Apple series Your Friends and Neighbors, where she plays the series regular role of Elena Benavides. She’s currently shooting the Netflix comedy film One Attempt Remaining, starring opposite Jennifer Garner, John Cena, and Kate McKinnon.
Select past TV/film credits include the indie hit The Menu, Prime Video’s The Consultant, the John Wells Netflix series Maid, and the Paramount+ series The Offer. Carrero starred in the Freeform comedy Young & Hungry for six seasons in addition to multiple TV projects spanning a decade-long career. Her voice-over work includes titular roles in Elena of Avalor, playing Disney’s first Latina princess, and She-Ra on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power for Netflix. Carrero is repped by Gersh, 3Arts and Skrzyniarz & Mallean.
