The iconic Agatha Christie made headlines in May when it was announced that the BBC had won a competitive bid to develop a new drama based on the origins of Hercule Poirot. It continues a lively small screen trend of well-known characters being reimagined by zeroing in on their younger years, whether Legally Blonde's Elle Woods or Sherlock Holmes himself.
More headlines followed in June when it was revealed that Killing Eve and Sex Education star Edward Bluemel had been tapped for the pivotal role. The actor, who is just 33 years old, is the youngest to ever step into Poirot's shoes.
Variety has now revealed the first official image of Edward Bluemel as Poirot in the upcoming BBC adaptation. You can see how Bluemel looks as Poirot, both in a full-body shot and a close-up, in the gallery below:
Poirot, a six-episode origin story, is currently filming in Liverpool. It is described as an “intimate study” of the Belgian detective who would ultimately become a legend. Centering around three of Agatha Christie's earlier stories, the detective drama also pitches itself as an “epic” examination of Britain during a period between wars. But it also has a personal bent for Hercule, introducing his friends and one rival in particular.
Bluemel, who is also recognized for his leading turn in the Prime Video fantasy series My Lady Jane, is joined in the Poirot cast by a litany of well-known performers. They include Henry Ashton, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Mawaan Rizwan.
The series, which is written by Benji Waters, will premiere on BritBox in North America and BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the U.K. The premiere date is set for next year, though an exact release date remains undisclosed.
