Agatha Christie's new series with a 21st-century upgrade pays off.

Detectives like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are Christie's most popular characters, but her lesser-known favorites, Tommy and Tuppence, now headline a new BritBox series. Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan star as the titular duo in Agatha Christie's Tommy & Tuppence, as the two exes turn amateur detectives after a wedding they attended goes wrong. With help from Tommy's aunt Ada (Imelda Staunton), they must prove to the police they caught the wrong person. It's the first series to adapt Christie's novel with a 21st-century update.

With five reviews, Agatha Christie's Tommy & Tuppence debuts to a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the score is subject to change as more reviews come in, it's already a good start for an adaptation that modernizes the iconic author's story. Although the titular pair appeared in a few British and French productions, most of those adaptations don't have a Rotten Tomatoes score for comparison.

Meanwhile, Tommy & Tuppence is one of Christie's best-rated television series in the 21st century. The BritBox show ties with Why Didn't They Ask Evans? and The Witness for the Prosecution with 100%.

Nevertheless, critics agree that BritBox's Tommy & Tuppence is a refreshing take on Christie's crime novels, including an update on the duo's contrasting personalities. Thomas and Dylan deliver a romantic and charming dynamic, and Staunton's supporting role is a highlight. Although the show's romance was strong with the "will-they-won't-they" trope, the murder mysteries were noted as too thin.

In ScreenRant's review of Agatha Christie's Tommy & Tuppence, Eli Kuiper praised the gamble to modernize the series, saying it "undeniably paid off," and Dylan and Thomas' casting as the titular pair was "a stroke of genius." Staunton's Christie-inspired character complements the duo, as she "delivers an expectedly solid, sly performance."

Tommy & Tuppence also features a "palpable" romance, though it "never overshadows the mystery storytelling." Awarding a solid 7 out of 10, the contemporary adaptation "might not be the cleverest murder mystery drama out there, but it offers something genuinely new."

BBC's Partners in Crime, starring David Walliams and Jessica Raine, was the last time the pair appeared in an adaptation. In the last decade, plenty of Christie's novels have been adapted into film or television, including three Hercule Poirot movies by Kenneth Branagh, Towards Zero, and Agatha Christie's Seven Dials. Meanwhile, a prequel series focusing on a young Hercule Poirot is in development and will launch sometime in 2027.

The first two episodes of Agatha Christie's Tommy & Tuppence are now available on BritBox. New episodes will drop weekly on Tuesdays.
