Collier Jennings is an entertainment journalist with a substantial amount of experience under his belt. Collier, or "CJ" to his friends and family, is a dedicated fan of genre films - particularly science fiction, fantasy and comic book adaptations, not to mention all forms of animation animation. This stems from a close bond with his father, who introduced him to these genres via copies of X-Men comics and reruns of the original Ultraman series. Using his near-encyclopedic knowledge and bottomless love of genre, he's been able to tackle a wide variety of articles.
Spider-Noir isn't just a great television debut for Nicolas Cage, but it's also proof that the Spider-Man franchise still has plenty of life left. After years of Sony trying to give Spider-Man's lesser-known villains and allies their own movies, Spider-Noir is a reminder that audiences actually want to see Spider-Man. Cage's performance as a jaded private investigator also proves that there are plenty of takes on Spider-Man that aren't Peter Parker or Miles Morales that deserve the spotlight, and if Prime Video wants to continue with this forward momentum, it should revisit a Spider-Man project it previously shelved.
Most fans have forgotten that Spider-Noir wasn't the first Spider-Man-themed project announced by Sony and Prime Video. Back in 2020, it was revealed that Silk: Spider Society would launch a wave of Spidey-focused TV shows and would be the first Marvel project to feature an Asian-American character in the lead role. But after multiple creative overhauls and a move to satellite streamer MGM+, Prime Video decided to shelve Silk: Spider Society. The response to Spider-Noir proves that Prime Video made the wrong decision, and it should bring Silk: Spider Society back if it wants to continue in this new direction for the Spider-Man franchise.
'Silk: Spider Society' Could Give Silk & Other Spider-Men (& Women) The Limelight
Image via Marvel ComicsPerhaps the biggest draw of Spider-Noir, other than its carefully crafted black-and-white aesthetic or its stellar cast, is the character journey Nicolas Cage's Ben Reilly goes on. Reilly starts out struggling over a past decision that caused him to hang up his webs, but eventually becomes "The Spider" again to battle crime boss Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson) and put the past to rest. Silk: Spider Society features a character who's going through her own issues, as Cindy Moon not only deals with the revelation that she has spider powers but also struggles to acclimate to society after being locked in a bunker for ten years. Add in her quest to find her family, and you have all the ingredients for a compelling TV series. There's also Cindy's Korean-American heritage to consider, which would let Spider Society tap into the main appeal of the Spider-Verse franchise and the runaway success of KPop Demon Hunters.
If Silk: Spider Society plans to adapt the Spider Society, it could also give some lesser-known Spider-Men and Spider-Women the spotlight. Fans who love the Scarlet Spider or want to see Spider-Girl in the spotlight could see those characters brought to life in live action. There's also a potential connection to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as the Spider Society was formed by Miguel O'Hara, aka the Spider-Man of 2099. Giving a fan-favorite character like Miguel the live-action treatment is bound to draw audiences of all stripes, especially if Prime Video could convince Oscar Isaac to reprise his role as the futuristic web-slinger. A Spider-Man who fights in a Blade Runner-inspired world sounds like a must-watch television series!
'Silk: Spider Society' Should Adapt This Iconic Storyline
Silk: Spider Society would need to come up with a great story that not only centers Cindy Moon, but also has a great reason for a collection of spider-powered heroes to join forces. There's actually a storyline that could be a great basis for the series: the original Spider-Verse storyline by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel, which pits Peter Parker and his fellow web-slingers against the vampiric beings known as the Inheritors. Peter and the Inheritor Morlun previously tangled twice, and his family seeks to slaughter all Spiders across the Web of Life and Destiny. They pay extra attention to Cindy, as she's the avatar of a powerful being known as the Bride, who poses a great threat to them, meaning that a series adapting this storyline could be full of action and mysticism.
Spider-Noir's success might lead to it getting a second season, but Prime Video should definitely revisit Silk: Spider Society. It would give the steamer another great Spider-Man show and put the spotlight on a character who truly deserves it.
Spider-Noir is available to stream on Prime Video.
