Big news, Neon Genesis Evangelion fans: the legendary franchise has a new anime series in the works. It has been over thirty years since the original series aired, and if you’ve been looking for a reason to go back and revisit the show, now you have it. A follow-up is officially in production.
Confirmation of the new series came during a celebration of Evangelion’s three-decade milestone. The anniversary announcement revealed the behind-the-scenes talent working to make the show, including writer Yoko Taro.
Beyond that, details about the new series, including a title, are scarce, so be sure to check back regularly as more info becomes available.
The new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime is being produced by Studio Khara, in collaboration with CloverWorks. It is set to be directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toru Yatabe, and written by Yoko Taro. The latter is best known for his work in video games, but he also has some manga and television experience under his belt.
It was also announced that music for the series will be handled by Keiichi Okabe. Few details other than have been revealed so far, meaning Evangelion fans' immediate hype for the upcoming series has been coupled with intense speculation. That is, could this be a long-awaited sequel series? Or something else?
The Neon Genesis Evangelion anime debuted in 1995. Its 26-episode run concluded in March of the next year, meaning we're actually approaching the 30th anniversary of the original finale's airing. The ending was subsequently fleshed out in the 1997 movie Death & Rebirth. In turn, this was expanded into The End of Evangelion, released that same year.
In the decades since, there have been Evangelion spin-offs and supplementals to keep fans invested in the franchise. A live-action film has languished in developmental hell since the 2000s. Alternate timelines have been explored, and alternate edits have reinterpreted the original series, but the OG arc has remained in stasis.
So, it's natural that fans would gravitate toward the idea of a new Evangelion for a new era. The franchise has not even remotely burned through its seemingly limitless potential, but in order to fully embrace everything it can be, a new chapter in the epic Neon Genesis Evangelion saga should be a priority.
