A Minecraft Movie 2 is building its cast with a major star.

The upcoming A Minecraft Movie 2 is a sequel to the 2025 adventure comedy movie set in the universe of the massively popular video game of the same name. Original director Jared Hess is set to helm the project, which features returning stars Jason Momoa as Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, Jennifer Coolidge as Marlene, Matt Berry as Nitwit, and Jack Black as Steve.

Per Deadline, Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of A Minecraft Movie 2. While her character was originally reported as being under wraps, it has since been revealed that she will be playing Alex.

Alex, who was teased in the A Minecraft Movie post-credits scene, is another playable avatar from Minecraft, like the original movie's Steve (who is perhaps the best-known avatar from the franchise).

Dunst's casting is something of a departure from the way Alex was originally portrayed in the first movie's post-credits scene. While the character was only seen from behind (as portrayed onscreen by Alice May Connolly), she was voiced by Saturday Night Live alum Kate McKinnon.

McKinnon's performance style felt like it blended with the cast of A Minecraft Movie, who were largely giving broad comic performances. However, while Dunst has starred in comedies such as Drop Dead Gorgeous and Bring It On, she is primarily known for her dramatic performances in projects including Interview with the Vampire, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, and Melancholia.
