As quickly as George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrived, it’s already concluded its first season. The show is set between the events of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and it follows the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg. Egg is really Aegon Targaryen, the future king of the seven kingdoms. The show begins as a short journey following Duncan as he tries to enter a jousting tournament, but when he’s accused of raising his hand against the young Prince Aerion Targaryen, he’s called into a Trial of the Seven. This is similar to a trial by combat, except in this older tradition, the accused must pick six other knights to stand with him and prove his innocence against six knights.

While the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is much smaller in scale than the opposing seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, the show does involve famous houses such as Targaryen and Baratheon. The King sitting on the Iron Throne at the time of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is Baelor Targaryen, and his brother is Maekar, father of the young Egg. Maekar stands with his son Aerion in the Trial of the Seven, but after his son is defeated, he offers Duncan a place at his court at Summerhall, serving the Targaryens and training a young Aegon. While it was believed by non-book readers that Maekar would have a part to play in Season 2, actor Sam Spruell recently confirmed during an interview that he will not be part of the second season in any capacity. He expressed a desire to return in Season 3.

When Does ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 Come Out?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is already in production, and it’s been confirmed that the second season will premiere on HBO Max before the end of next year. George R.R. Martin has already visited the set, and he’s admitted that he’s happy with the rate at which things are going. The third season of House of the Dragon is also coming out this summer, and the fourth and final season will air in 2028. That’s three straight years of new Game of Thrones shows.

Check out the entire first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on HBO Max and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Season 2 and beyond.
