A 50-Year-Old Canon Lens That Out-Resolves a 100-Megapixel Sensor

A discontinued Canon lens from the 1970s can fully resolve the 100-megapixel sensor sitting inside a modern medium format body. Old glass carries a look that clean digital optics rarely match, and that character is exactly what draws people back to gear that stopped being made decades ago.

The lens in question is the Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 SSC Aspherical, and mathphotographer walks through mounting it on the Fuji GFX100 II as a follow-up to an earlier test on the Hasselblad X2D 100C II. He compares the optical character to a Leica Noctilux, and in his view this lens sometimes carries even more personality. He bought the lens himself, and he's clear that it isn't cheap on the secondary market, where prices run into the thousands. The point of the exercise is straightforward: fifty-year-old glass on a current sensor produces images with texture and mood that feel different from anything modern.

The mechanical setup is where the two systems split. On the Hasselblad, he had to push a spring-loaded pin, rotate a silver ring, and force the lens into manual override before it would work with the Novoflex adapter. On the Fuji, the Fotodiox adapter carries a ring that switches the lens between install mode and aperture mode on its own, so the lens can stay in auto diaphragm mode straight out of the box. Turn the ring, the lens drops into manual aperture control, and the aperture blades respond as you rotate the ring from f/1.2 down to f/16. The bigger difference is the shutter. The GFX100 II gives you a focal plane shutter, so you're not pushed into electronic shutter the way you are on the X2D, which means less exposure to rolling shutter when your subject moves.

The portraits from the shoot with his model do the convincing. Wide open, you get cat-eye bokeh in the corners, glowing catchlights, and an eye that lands pinpoint sharp while the eyebrows already fall into soft focus. Stop down toward f/2.8 or f/5.6 and the background lights turn circular, and you start to read the scene behind the subject, a waiter in a white shirt, a second Mercedes G-Wagon pulling into a lot, without losing separation. The video is honest about the misses too, pointing out a couple of frames where manual focus landed slightly off the intended eye, then noting he can clean those up in Topaz Sharpen AI. His own verdict favors the Fuji by a hair, and he openly admits he can't fully explain why, though he suspects the mechanical shutter plays a part.

Manual focus at 85mm and f/1.2 is unforgiving, and that's the real skill this approach demands. The FD lens has a very long focus throw with a one-meter minimum focusing distance, and that long travel is an asset rather than a nuisance. It gives you fine control over exactly where the plane of focus sits, which matters enormously when your depth of field is a sliver of a face. If you plan to try adapted glass like this, lean on focus peaking and magnified live view, and set your in-body stabilization to the lens's actual focal length by hand. The camera can't read that from an uncoupled vintage lens, so dialing in 85mm is what lets stabilization work. That single habit separates usable frames from a folder of near-misses, and it's the kind of workflow detail that a growing crowd of shooters mixing legacy lenses with high-resolution mirrorless bodies has learned to treat as non-negotiable.
