Shealyn Scott is a Senior Writer at Screen Rant. She has been writing for the site since 2024, focused on network, reality, streaming, and classic television.
A creative writer, journalist, and lover of the written word in all its forms, Shealyn enjoys deconstructing scenes from her favorite shows, using context clues and historical precedent to predict major plot points (which, due to her successful track record, has sparked rumors of clairvoyance).
As an award-winning student journalist, Shealyn spent her college years advocating for the humanities while studying English Literature. Her love of storytelling propelled her to expand her degree with minors in Writing and History, believing life to be a mere collection of stories that can be framed in as many ways as a movie scene.
As a Senior member of the TV Team, Shealyn treats the series she covers like books, analyzing every line, camera angle, and lighting choice. Thankfully, her personal mission statement lines up perfectly with Screen Rant: every creative work deserves just as much thought from the viewer as it received from its creator.

SPOILERS AHEAD for 9-1-1 season 10, episode 1.9-1-1 is finally back, and the milestone season is kicking off with a major format change. Since its 2018 premiere, 9-1-1 has cemented its legacy as one of the best procedurals of the century, largely thanks to its campy emergencies, emotional love stories, and heartwarming found family at the center of the action. Yet, the show rattled millions of viewers when it killed off beloved fire captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) at the end of season 8. Over a year later, longtime fans are still reluctant to accept the cast exit, let alone embrace a brand-new, Bobby-less era.

Nevertheless, 9-1-1 season 10 is off to a fantastic start. As Eddie (Ryan Guzman) attempts to help Buck (Oliver Stark) navigate fatherhood, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is embracing her interim management position at the dispatch center. Similarly, May (Corinne Massiah) is embarking on her own journey as a nursing student while Chimney (Kenneth Choi) is gradually finding his footing as the newest leader of LAFD station 118. Regardless, no character is affecting the overarching narrative as much as Angela Bassett's Athena.

9-1-1 Season 10 Opens On A Convoluted Mystery

Despite promotional materials marketing 9-1-1's contentious volcano tragedy as the opening emergency, the season 10 premiere instead lays the groundwork for two distinct mysteries that intersect at the most disastrous moment possible. At the forefront of the episode is a massive sinkhole that strikes downtown LA— or, more precisely, the so-called "post-mortem" to figure out what happened, led by Rob Huebel's delightfully grating Ty Worrell. While the 118 attends to the physical damage done by the natural disaster, Maddie is tasked with auditing all emergency calls in the vicinity, revealing a pattern of strange disturbances.

Meanwhile, a confounding case falls into Athena's lap in the form of an unconscious man with severe burns covering his body. Alongside her new coworker, Athena seemingly closes the case almost instantly, but there's something inexplicably off that clearly weighs on the rookie detective. Unsurprisingly, Athena decides to go rogue and continue the investigation on her own, leaving her trapped underground as the sinkhole suddenly starts erupting lava.

Unlike most 9-1-1 episodes, the two main plots are clearly interwoven, but the full extent of their connection remains to be seen. It's unclear why the construction workers robbed a jeweler and, more importantly, why they surrendered a false confession to Athena. Furthermore, the 9-1-1 calls Maddie tracks make it seem like there's a grand conspiracy at play that a lava flood can't simply resolve. Yet, the most intriguing aspect of the 9-1-1 season 10 premiere is how transformative Athena's detective work feels.

Athena’s New Role Completely Changes The Dynamic In 9-1-1

Without question, Athena's promotion in 9-1-1 season 10 was long overdue, but her career change is having a ripple effect on the series at large. Angela Bassett has been a cast mainstay since the very beginning, but her character's new role as a detective is unearthing some rare feelings of insecurity and doubt. Athena herself details how being a rookie at her age feels disconcerting, though everyone else easily recognizes her aptitude for crimesolving.

Frankly, Athena has been acting like a detective for years, but bearing the official title is something else entirely. Before, she was a renowned sergeant who would always chase leads and go far beyond her jurisdiction, as long as it was in the pursuit of justice. Realistically, her actions bordered on dangerous vigilantism, but being a detective— specifically one on network television— will open up a whole new world for Athena and offer plenty of opportunities to take the law into her own hands.

9-1-1 Should Embrace Its Detective Procedural Elements Going Forward

To that end, there has always been an investigative edge to the procedural drama, and clever sleuthing has made for some of the series' best episodes to date. Whether it's the lighthearted heist in "Ocean's 9-1-1" (season 2, episode 15) or the gripping cold case solved in "The Devil You Know" (season 6, episode 3), 9-1-1 has always been at its best when it works in a touch of mystery. Of course, that's not to say the ABC drama should fully pivot into a modern Columbo, but 9-1-1 season 10 is certainly do or die.

Plus, amping up the detective procedural elements will allow the show to better balance its story. Nearly every main character has something major going on in their personal life, which means 9-1-1 needs some good old-fashioned professional conflict to cut through the drama. Like always, the firefighters and dispatch workers will be invaluable members of the ensemble, but Detective Athena Grant has the potential to breathe new life into 9-1-1 and set up the show for genre-bending success far beyond season 10.

New episodes of 9-1-1 season 10 air each Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
