6 Strongest Dragon Ball Characters Defeated By Goku

Goku powering up to beat impossibly powerful enemies is the center of more-or-less every narrative arc in Dragon Ball. Or that’s how it appears on the surface, at least. Realistically, however, Goku often relies on help from his allies to take down their greatest threats. The number of opponents Goku has beaten in a true 1v1 fight is far smaller than the list of those he’s beaten overall.

That means the victories Goku has in Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball Super where he and he alone defeats an opponent nobody else can are truly special. While he may still occasionally be lent energy or get a last-minute power-up by an ally, the strongest opponents Goku has defeated one-on-one aren’t necessarily the strongest villains in Dragon Ball overall.

Kid Buu (Dragon Ball Z Season 9)

Kid Buu is arguably the most purely destructive villain Goku ever defeated in Dragon Ball Z. Unlike many of the DBZ’s other major antagonists, Kid Buu has no interest in ruling the universe or proving his superiority. He exists to destroy, making him an unpredictable and terrifying opponent. His regeneration, extraordinary speed, immense strength, and seemingly endless stamina made him incredibly difficult to put down.

Goku ultimately defeated Kid Buu with the Super Spirit Bomb after an extended battle on the Sacred World of the Kais. The victory was not entirely without assistance, as Goku needed the energy of Earth's inhabitants for the final blow, which he was only able to muster after Vegeta had Dende wish for Goku’s energy to be restored with the Namekian Dragon Balls. Still, Goku was the one who ultimately defeated Kid Buu after every other hero failed and after Vegeta admitted he wasn’t strong enough, making the battle one of his most significant solo victories.

Omega Shenron (Dragon Ball GT Season 2)

While he may or may not be canon in Dragon Ball, Omega Shenron is still easily one of the strongest opponents Goku ever faced outside the franchise’s central timeline. He represents the culmination of Dragon Ball GT's Shadow Dragon Saga, and no other GT villain came close to his power. Created from the negative energy accumulated in the Dragon Balls, Omega Shenron possessed the combined powers of the seven Shadow Dragons, giving him a vast range of abilities and overwhelming strength.

Goku's fight against Omega Shenron was especially difficult because the villain was initially far beyond anything Super Saiyan 4 Goku could handle. Even with Vegeta reaching SSJ4, the pair struggled to overcome him. Goku eventually defeated Omega Shenron with the Universal Spirit Bomb, which required energy from across the universe. Although the attack was powered by others, Goku was the only fighter capable of performing the move, and so was solely responsible for Omega Shenron’s defeat.

Copy-Vegeta (Dragon Ball Super Season 3)

Not every single one of Goku’s strongest opponents was a powerful villain bent on destroying the world or causing universe-wide destruction. Copy-Vegeta was an unusual opponent for Goku because he was simply a duplicate of Vegeta that foolishly believed he was the genuine article, and wanted to kill the real Vegeta to prove it. Created by the Commeson parasite, Copy-Vegeta possessed Vegeta's physical abilities and memories, allowing him to replicate the Saiyan's formidable combat skills.

Copy-Vegeta’s strength was enough to overwhelm the real Vegeta, leaving Goku to confront an enemy with the power of one of his closest allies (one whose power comes close to Goku’s own, too). The battle was complicated by Copy-Vegeta's limited lifespan and the strange circumstances surrounding his creation. Victory was possible thanks to Goku exploiting the instability of Copy-Vegeta's body rather than simply overpowering him. The fight may not rank among his most physically demanding victories, but an opponent with Vegeta's abilities still ranks among the strongest that Goku ever defeated 1v1.

Golden Frieza (Dragon Ball Super Season 1)

Fans were delighted when iconic Dragon Ball Z villain Frieza returned to Dragon Ball Super, especially when he revealed his Golden Frieza form and the true extent of his power was known. After training for the first time in his life, Frieza unlocked his Golden form and became powerful enough to overwhelm even Super Saiyan Blue Goku. His raw strength was extraordinary, and his improved abilities made him one of the most dangerous opponents Goku had faced since the end of Dragon Ball Z.

Goku eventually managed to gain the upper hand by exploiting Golden Frieza's greatest weakness: his inability to efficiently control the form. Frieza's stamina rapidly deteriorated, allowing Goku to dominate their battle. However, shortly after Goku declared victory, Frieza had Sorbet shoot Goku, then quickly destroyed Earth by shooting an energy beam straight into the ground while Vegeta monologued instead of stepping in to deliver a killing blow. Thankfully, Whis was there to reverse time with his Temporal Do-Over ability, after which Goku then finished Frieza off with a Kamehameha.

Kefla (Dragon Ball Super Season 5)

Interestingly, only one of the strongest opponents Goku has defeated one-on-one in Dragon Ball is a fellow Saiyan. Kefla was created when Universe 6 Saiyans Kale and Caulifla used the Potara earrings to fuse during the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super. The resulting warrior combined Caulifla's combat talent with Kale's extraordinary power, creating an opponent capable of pushing Goku to his absolute limits.

By the time Goku fought Kefla, he was already exhausted from the Tournament of Power and had struggled to maintain Ultra Instinct -Sign-. Kefla's overwhelming offensive power forced him to rely on the technique once again, and while it was a struggle, Goku ultimately defeated her with a perfectly executed Ultra Instinct Kamehameha. While Goku had assistance from his allies throughout the larger competition, Kefla's elimination was entirely his own achievement, making it one of his most impressive one-on-one victories.

Moro (Chapter 66 of the Dragon Ball Super Manga)

One of the most recent villains to be added to the Dragon Ball canon, Moro was instantly one of the most dangerous enemies Goku ever faced from the moment he debuted, and his abilities made him fundamentally different from other villains. An ancient sorcerer known as the Planet-Eater, Moro could absorb energy from living beings and entire worlds, steadily growing stronger while weakening his enemies. His ability to copy abilities and manipulate energy made the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga one of Goku's most challenging battles.

In the end, Goku was only able to beat Moro using Mastered Ultra-Instinct, but not before the villain merged with the Earth itself. The final confrontation required Goku to push Ultra Instinct beyond its limits, and in the process became a giant energy avatar of himself. Goku ultimately destroyed Moro's crystal and defeated him, ending the threat, but it was an incredibly close call. It was not a completely isolated victory since several allies lent their energy at multiple points, but Goku was ultimately the only warrior in Dragon Ball capable of delivering the decisive defeat.
