As a performer, John has always been nothing short of flamboyant. But on one occasion, even one of music’s most exuberant showmen knew when to lower the volume and let sincerity take center stage. That moment came with "Candle in the Wind," a song that not only honored a fallen icon but eventually became a ballad that represents the tears, grief, and mourning of an entire country.
The Original 1973 Version of "Candle in the Wind" Was Inspired by Marilyn Monroe
While "Bennie and the Jets" was the diamond of John’s seminal seventh studio album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, the project’s third single was the hidden gem that would later become one of the most important songs in John's career: "Candle in the Wind". Unlike the drama and dazzle of his other songs on the same album — namely "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" — “Candle in the Wind” carried a more pensive, introspective flair that perfectly matched its simple piano melody. By the time of its release, the song peaked at No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart and remained there for nine weeks.

“Candle in the Wind” is, in many ways, a letter to someone who is no longer on this Earth. The very first line already makes that obvious: “Goodbye Norma Jeane.” Norma Jeane was the real name of Hollywood’s most famous blonde bombshell, Marilyn Monroe, who tragically took her own life 11 years before John wrote the song itself. However, that is not to say that John was necessarily a huge Monroe fan. As his longtime songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, later explained, the subject could just as easily have been anybody else who passed away at a young age: "It's not that I didn't have a respect for her; it's just that the song could just as easily have been about James Dean or Jim Morrison…Kurt Cobain. It's a beauty frozen in time."
In 1997, Elton John Re-Recorded "Candle in the Wind" Following the Death of Princess Diana
The original 1973 version of "Candle in the Wind" describes just how difficult life truly was for Monroe behind the glamour of Hollywood. The song paints her as someone constantly misunderstood by the public. While others tried to manipulate her, whisper lies to her, and crawl around her, Monroe still “had the grace to hold herself.” The original version plays more like a lament, pointing out just how lonely she really was despite the industry turning her into one of the most sought-after superstars of the generation. Even after she passed away, the press continued to sensationalize her image instead of honoring her as a true actress and human being.

In 1997, "Candle in the Wind" found new life during what was arguably one of the darkest moments in modern British royal history: the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Known as the “People’s Princess,” her tragic death on August 31, 1997, left a huge hole in the public's hearts. John performed a specially rewritten version of the song at Diana’s funeral, now better known by its alternative title, "Candle in the Wind 1997"/“Goodbye England’s Rose.” Instead of telling the tragic story of a young Hollywood starlet who died too soon, "Candle in the Wind 1997" transformed into an anthem of national mourning, honoring the late princess's compassion, grace, and loveliness.
By the End of the 1990s, "Candle in the Wind 1997" Became the Second Highest-Selling Physical Single of All Time
Unlike the original version, "Candle in the Wind 1997" skyrocketed in sales with more than 33 million copies sold worldwide. The Princess Diana tribute was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the second highest-selling physical single of all time, between "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Despite the success of the rewritten version, John refuses to play it live ever again out of respect. It even took a while for John to play the Monroe version for audiences again, but only because the overwhelming sense of grief during the time was just too hard to shake off.
“The only way I’ll ever sing it again is if the children [Princes William and Harry] ask me. Otherwise, it would be totally inappropriate.
I don’t know how I’ll eventually feel about that. To me, that’s a totally different song, but it may be that the [feelings] will be too closely connected. I think I’m just going to put it to one side now, . . . just drop it for a while and then see how I feel.”
