Today was always going to be a huge day for Marvel fans, as the Ultimate Universe imprint officially comes to an end. However, the publisher just stunned its biggest fans with a sentence that literally no-one was expecting. Here's what you need to know.
In 2023, Marvel launched its new Ultimate Universe imprint, creating an entirely new version of the Marvel Universe - one where Marvel's most iconic heroes never existed, and the villains conquered the planet.
Today, Ultimate Universe: Finale completes the story of Earth's heroes rising up, defeating the Maker, and beginning the hard work of making the world a better place. But typical of the Ultimate Universe, the saga doesn't end without a shocking surprise...
The Ultimate Universe Isn't Over
After revealing where Wolverine, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Storm, the X-Men and Iron Lad end up after the Maker's defeat, Ultimate Finale #1 ends on a single shocking statement: "The Ultimate Universe will return."
This sentiment is a huge shock because Marvel recently announced it was permanently ending the Ultimate Universe imprint, taking the bold step of completing the story begun in 2023's Ultimate Invasion. Now, it's revealed this ending will be more of a hiatus, with the Ultimate Universe returning one day soon.
What the Ultimate Universe's Return Will Look Like
The comic ends with the Maker defeated, but new threats rising. Emma Frost has assembled a new cabal of villains, the Sun Emperor is cracking down on mutants, and Victor von Doom has come out of hiding. As Iron Lad and Vision look out over the reclamation of Detroit, Tony Stark admits their revolution will be an endless, ongoing fight to do better.
It's likely that when the Ultimate Universe returns, it will follow a significant time jump, setting up a new world order. Having conquered the former America (now named 'the Free States of the North American Union), it's likely the heroes will use the country as a base, while new threats arise in Japan and Russia.
There's also a tease of a new Asgardian pantheon rising, an uprising rooted in Atlantis, and a civil war between the Avengers and Ultimates.
In the original Ultimate Universe imprint launched in 2000, Marvel took the unusual step of numbering volumes of The Ultimates, publishing The Ultimates 2 and The Ultimates 3. It's possible that when the Ult U returns, Marvel will label it The Ultimate Universe 2 (potentially '2.0', using the language Tony has adopted for different iterations of his team.)
However, the Ultimate Universe is built on surprises and huge swings, so what it will look like when it returns is anyone's guess. Likewise, it's unclear how long it will take for the Ultimate Universe to return - especially if Marvel really did plan to cancel it until recently.
The Ultimate Universe Lives On
Following the news of the Ultimate Universe's ending, fans were dismayed - both because the imprint has been such a critical and commercial hit, and because DC is continuing to dominate comic discussion with its similar Absolute Universe imprint. Apparently, Marvel ultimately came to the same conclusions, and decided not to kill off the hit continuity.
It will be a long time until fans know what was going on behind closed doors. Did Marvel always intend to continue the Ultimate Universe at a later date, or did fan reaction change their plans? Whatever the answer, fans are shocked today to find they get everything they wanted, with Marvel's Ultimate Universe planned for a grand return some time in the future.
Ultimate Universe: Finale #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
