Law & Order: Organized Crime's wild ride from NBC to Peacock and then back to NBC again has come to an end. Organized Crime was officially cancelled, nearly a full year after the season 5 finale debuted. For most television series, a cancellation means that an actor is done playing that character forever. For a series that takes place in Dick Wolf's seven-show TV universe, however, the end of Organized Crime could be just the beginning of new chapters.
Christopher Meloni got his own spinoff in the first place because he was reprising a fan-favorite role from twelve seasons of Law & Order: SVU. There were enough crossovers with SVU and Law & Order over the course of Organized Crime that the hot-headed detective and his coworkers are already connected to other shows. In fact, Organized Crime is even connected to NBC's three One Chicago shows, as well as FBI and CIA over on CBS. There are plenty of places for familiar faces to visit.
That's not to say that there's a spot elsewhere in the Dick Wolf world for every former Organized Crime star. Characters like Randall and Bernie likely don't have a place in the franchise moving forward since their stories were so Stabler-centric. For others, though, there are seven ongoing shows with the potential to bring them on as guests, recurring stars, or possibly even regulars.
Christopher Meloni
Virginia Sherwood / ©Peacock / Courtesy Everett CollectionDespite the season 27 finale of Law & Order: SVU showing why Benson doesn't need Stabler anymore, the Law & Order franchise still needs Christopher Meloni to show up from time to time. There's no better place for that to happen than on SVU opposite Mariska Hargitay. Meloni was emotional when he commented on Organized Crime's cancellation, but notably didn't rule out returning as Stabler at some point in the future.
The door seems to be open to welcome him back, and the will-they-won't-they relationship between Stabler and Benson has had many fans hooked since the late '90s. Not even Stabler ghosting Benson for nearly a decade was enough to deter viewers who wanted to see them together. Speaking with NBC Insider about featuring Meloni as a guest star in season 28, SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas shared:
"If I can get him, I definitely will. I don't want it to be a gag or a stunt, like it has to be meaningful and it has to come from these characters. There were at least two times this season where I was like, 'Hey, is he around?'"
The season 5 finale of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which is now officially the series finale, didn't end on a huge cliffhanger that would prevent Stabler from turning up again on SVU. In fact, the biggest storylines of the show were wrapped up pretty neatly. Despite still mourning his brother's death in the final moments, he couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of New York City.
Assuming that the character is staying in NYC, that also opens Stabler up to appearing on the original Law & Order, FBI, and CIA moving forward. A lot may depend on Christopher Meloni's schedule and level of interest in playing Stabler again on SVU. Anything more substantial than guest appearances seems unlikely, but that's still better than those ten years after Stabler left without a goodbye.
Danielle Moné Truitt
Zach Dilgard / ©NBC / Courtesy Everett CollectionDanielle Moné Truitt joined Christopher Meloni to launch Law & Order: Organized Crime as Sergeant Ayanna Bell, the boss of the OCCB. Bell had to find a balance between trusting Stabler's ability to get results and doing things by the book, and he didn't make it easy on her. The season 5 finale even included a moment of Bell warning Detective Reyes not to let Stabler "pull you into the deep end along with him," and she'd had about enough of Reyes and Vargas lying to her about helping him on the sly.
Therefore, it could make sense for one of the other remaining Dick Wolf shows to establish that Bell had switched to a different role in the NYPD for a fresh start. Organized Crime tied off a lot of her loose ends by the end, so perhaps she could appear every once in a while on Law & Order or SVU to pitch in on a case. Special Victims Unit has more officers than detectives at this point, so it wouldn't be out of place to see Bell working under Benson despite her status as a sergeant.
Bell could also make sense to appear on FBI and CIA on CBS. While the agents and operatives of those shows generally aren't involved with standard police work, they do often encounter members of the NYPD. She could even serve as a liaison between the NYPD and the Bureau, which could involve her in both FBI and CIA.
Rick Gonzalez
Virginia Sherwood / ©Peacock / Courtesy Everett CollectionRick Gonzalez's first appearance in the franchise was actually as a one-off guest star in Law & Order: SVU's first season, but he made an impression on Organized Crime as Detective Bobby Reyes. Although his character was originally part of an unofficial trio with Jet Slootmaekers and Jamie Whelan, he was the last one standing after Jet's exit and Jamie's death. His tendency to bend the rules made him a good ally for Stabler, but Bell's warning about Stabler pulling him into the "deep end" seemed to hit home in the season 5 finale.
Reyes was a good team player on Organized Crime, but really excelled at undercover work when given the chance. Even though Stabler got the majority of undercover storylines, the younger detective had a knack for it. That knack could be the key to bringing Reyes back elsewhere in the Dick Wolf TV universe. While Velasco mostly fills that role on SVU, Law & Order doesn't have a cop with a great deal of undercover experience on Reyes' level, so he could be an asset there.
An undercover operation could lead to encounters with FBI and CIA, since both are set in New York City. Reyes has experience working with the Bureau on Organized Crime. He's arguably also the best candidate to appear in the One Chicago side of the TV universe. Like what happened when SVU crossed over with Chicago PD years ago, a case could take Reyes to the Windy City to work with the cops of the Intelligence Unit. If Stabler could be sent to Rome for a decade for the NYPD, surely Reyes could visit Chicago for a case or two.
Ainsley Seiger
Virginia Sherwood / ©Peacock / Courtesy Everett CollectionAinsley Seiger technically left Law & Order: Organized Crime early in season 5 when Jet decided to step away from the NYPD, but the character could still have a future in Dick Wolf's world. Jet was alive and still determined to help victims when she left the OCCB as their resident tech genius. The early episodes of the season put her through the wringer, and her exit was open enough that she could have come back in a sixth season or beyond.
Organized Crime was actually Seiger's first professional acting job, and her only other TV shows to date are Law & Order and SVU. Oddly enough, the reasons given to explain Jet's split from Reyes and exit from the NYPD are the same reasons why she would be an ideal candidate to turn up again on another show. The computer genius decided to take a job with the FBI.
That didn't mean that Seiger was leaving Organized Crime to join the show called FBI, but the in-universe reason why she was no longer on Bell and Stabler's team by the end of season 5 was that she'd taken a federal job. It wouldn't be a stretch for Jet to appear on FBI on CBS. That show does already have its own resident computer genius, though, with analyst Ian Lim on board as 26 Fed's top technical analyst. If nothing else, it could be fun to see Jet and Ian as foils on FBI.
Nicky Torchia
NBCNicky Torchia was new to the Law & Order world when he debuted as Eli Stabler on Organized Crime, but Eli was originally born in an episode of Law & Order: SVU season 9 in 2007. The spinoff aged the character up enough for him to officially join the NYPD early in season 5. He was placed on leave after an officer-involved shooting, and the show didn't revisit the storyline to confirm whether he'd be staying a cop. His wife had already confided in the elder Stabler that she didn't want him on the force.
Since Organized Crime didn't conclude Eli's job with the NYPD before the end of the finale, there's no reason why he couldn't turn up on SVU every once in a while. Beat cops can be key to Special Victims cases, and it's unlikely that he'd be anywhere near detective rank when Law & Order: SVU season 28 starts. Torchia doesn't seem to be attached to any other ongoing project that would take him away from the Dick Wolf world, and Eli does have a bond with Benson.
Plus, featuring the youngest Stabler son from time to time would be a great way for SVU to keep fanning the Benson/Stabler flames while Christopher Meloni is absent following Law & Order: Organized Crime's cancellation. Fans may be divided on whether the two former partners should ever become romantic, but there's no denying that they love each other. Eli getting involved with Special Victims could be a way of forcing Benson to face that part of herself instead of throwing herself into the job on a daily basis.
