Few characters in Star Wars have left a larger mark on the Sith than Anakin Skywalker. Before becoming Darth Vader, he helped destroy the Separatists and struck down one of the Order's most powerful leaders. After embracing the dark side, Vader spent decades eliminating rivals, ancient Sith influences, and anyone who threatened Emperor Palpatine's rule. Ironically, the Chosen One became one of the Sith's greatest champions while simultaneously being responsible for some of the Order's most significant defeats.
Looking across both phases of his life, Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, the list of Sith opponents he overcame is extremely impressive. Some victories came through lightsaber duels, others through sheer determination against supernatural foes, while one ultimately fulfilled the ancient prophecy surrounding the Chosen One. Here are the five greatest Sith defeated by Anakin Skywalker throughout Star Wars history.
5 Starkiller Clone
The original Galen Marek, better known as Starkiller, was never officially recognized as a Sith Lord, but he was trained by Darth Vader as a dark side assassin capable of challenging the Jedi Order. Following his death, Vader secretly oversaw a cloning project designed to recreate his devastating apprentice. One of those clones became the main figure of The Force Unleashed II, eventually confronting Vader himself.
Although The Force Unleashed games are now part of the Star Wars Legends timeline, their comic adaptations remain among the franchise's most memorable alternate stories. The cloned Starkiller possessed nearly all of Galen Marek's extraordinary Force abilities, making him one of the most dangerous opponents Vader ever faced. His mastery of Force lightning, telekinesis, and lightsaber combat rivaled almost anyone in the Expanded Universe.
Their final confrontation was anything but easy for Vader. Starkiller relentlessly overwhelmed Imperial forces before forcing his former master into a climactic duel. The battle showcased the clone's incredible speed and raw power, repeatedly pushing Vader onto the defensive despite the Sith Lord's decades of experience.
In the comic adaptation, Vader ultimately prevailed through patience and superior tactical awareness rather than overwhelming strength alone. Even against a younger, physically superior opponent carrying nearly limitless Force potential, Vader demonstrated why he remained one of the galaxy's most feared duelists. Defeating a warrior modeled after one of the Expanded Universe's strongest Force users is one of Vader's most impressive combat achievements.
4 Darth Momin
Unlike most Sith Lords, Darth Momin had already died long before the Galactic Empire existed. The ancient Sith architect preserved his consciousness inside an elaborate mask, allowing his spirit to manipulate anyone unfortunate enough to wear it. Thousands of years after his death, Emperor Palpatine entrusted the relic to Darth Vader during the construction of Fortress Vader on Mustafar.
Momin quickly proved he was far more than a lingering ghost. His knowledge of Sith rituals allowed him to reshape Mustafar's dark side energies while subtly attempting to manipulate Vader. Eventually, Momin succeeded in temporarily restoring himself to physical form, creating one of the strangest Sith confrontations in modern Star Wars canon.
The resurrected Sith believed Vader's obsession with resurrecting Padmé Amidala made him vulnerable. Momin encouraged that obsession, hoping to use Vader's desperation to achieve his own ambitions. Instead, the encounter reminded Vader that attachment remained his greatest weakness, forcing him to confront both his grief and the manipulative nature of the ancient Sith.
Once Vader recognized Momin's true intentions, the duel ended decisively. Vader destroyed the newly restored Sith body and permanently shattered Momin's plans before imprisoning his spirit forever. Eliminating an ancient Sith whose consciousness had survived for millennia demonstrated that even supernatural dark side entities were no match for Vader's relentless resolve.
3 Darth Maul
Darth Maul's rivalry with Darth Vader never appeared on-screen, but one of the franchise's most respected voice actors believes the outcome was never seriously in doubt. Sam Witwer, who portrayed Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has repeatedly argued that Vader would decisively defeat the former Sith apprentice.

Following Mustafar, Anakin abandoned flashy movement in favor of brutally efficient combat built around overwhelming strength, precise timing, and relentless pressure. Despite losing much of his physical agility inside the armored suit, Vader became even more disciplined than he had been during the Clone Wars.
Although the two never officially dueled in current canon, their relative accomplishments strongly favor Vader. Maul ultimately fell to an aging Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Rebels, while Vader consistently defeated elite Jedi Masters and survived encounters with some of the galaxy's strongest Force users. Whether viewed through Legends material or expert commentary from those closely involved with the franchise, Darth Vader stands as the clear victor over his fellow Sith.
2 Count Dooku
Before becoming Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker claimed one of the Republic's greatest wartime victories by defeating Count Dooku during the Battle of Coruscant. Their duel aboard General Grievous' flagship marked the culmination of years of rivalry that began in Attack of the Clones and intensified throughout The Clone Wars television series.
Earlier encounters consistently favored Dooku. The former Jedi Master defeated Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis before once again overpowering them during later Clone Wars battles. Throughout the original trilogy, Vader remained completely loyal to his master despite lingering conflict over his past. Palpatine believed Luke Skywalker would eventually replace Vader, repeating the same cycle that had seen Count Dooku discarded years earlier. Instead, Luke's refusal to embrace hatred forced Vader to confront the humanity he believed had long disappeared.
As Palpatine unleashed Force lightning upon Luke aboard the second Death Star, Vader finally rejected decades of manipulation. Ignoring the immense pain caused by Sidious' attack, he lifted the Emperor and carried him toward the reactor shaft. The effort mortally wounded Vader, whose cybernetic systems could not withstand the Emperor's devastating power.

Palpatine's apparent death ended the Sith's direct rule over the galaxy and brought balance to the Force, at least until later events introduced his controversial return in The Rise of Skywalker.
