Warning: Spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has laid the groundwork for all sorts of classic stories to play out on the big screen. While the film didn't directly spell out what a potential sequel would be about, there's plenty of material there that could be used to segue into a new challenge for Mario and Luigi - or perhaps even someone else.
After all, spinoffs are certainly plausible. Super Mario may be Nintendo's biggest franchise, but it's not the only one that could carry a theatrical film. In fact, there's already reports that after featuing in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Donkey Kong may be getting his own movie too.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may follow a similar course with one of its own characters. Meanwhile, it'll most likely keep Mario's story going as well, with the character and his allies continuing to enjoy adventures based on classic or even recent installments in the Super Mario series.
Thanks to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's post-credits scene, a mysterious hint from Princess Rosalina, and a few other details, the film has built the foundation for years' worth of entertaining storylines.
5 Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars
One of the most interesting narrative decisions in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie pertains to Bowser; toward the beginning of the story, Bowser's attempts to butter up Mario are played for laughs, but after they crash-land on the Honeyhive Galaxy, it's made clear that Bowser's pleas were genuine.
Bowser even received a turn at being a hero. Of course, Bowser Jr. managed to undo that, but The Super Mario Galaxy Movie confirmed that there is good in him nonetheless. It's not hard to imagine Bowser giving up villainy a second time, which could set the stage for one of Bowser and Mario's most famous team-ups, which occurred in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
In Super Mario RPG, Bowser, Princess Peach, Mario, and two original characters join forces to battle the Smithy Gang and stop their plans of world domination. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie leading to story based on the game makes sense, especially in light of the reveal that "evil forces" were after Peach and Daisy. It's possible this line was meant to serve as setup for Smithy.
4 Super Mario Land
Princess Daisy's debut in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's post-credits scene could hold massive implications for what comes next. Princess Daisy's first video game appearance (and most important contribution to the lore) was in Super Mario Land, which was about Mario adventuring through a world called Sarasaland.
Super Mario Land saw Mario advance through Sarasaland's four kingdoms while on a mission to rescue its ruler, Princess Daisy, from Tatanga, who functioned as the game's primary antagonist. If Daisy's reason for being in the Gateway Galaxy is to seek help from outside sources, it may be that the next film will call for Mario and Luigi to save Sarasaland.
A Super Mario Land adaptation would also give the film an easy path to introducing Wario, who is arguably the movie franchise's biggest missing character at this point. In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario conquers Mario's home while the latter is in Sarasaland.
It's possible that a film version would combine the two narratives, which would be an organic way to tell a story that incorporates both Princess Daisy and Wario as principal characters.
3 Super Mario Bros. 3
After battling Bowser in The Super Mario Bros Movie, Mario and company had to contend with both the Koopa King and his son. Presumably, a third movie would have to find yet another twist on the Mario vs. Bowser rivalry (if it continues). To that end, the movie may take a page from Super Mario Bros. 3, which brought in the Koopalings.
Consisting of Iggy, Ludwig, Lemmy, Morton, Roy, Wendy, and Larry, the Koopalings have long-standing roles as Bowser's chief henchmen, ofter serving as mini-bosses Mario has to fight while on his way to face Bowser at the end game. But it all started with Super Mario Bros. 3, where the various kingdoms were divided up between the Koopalings.
Having stolen the magic wands of the respective kingdoms' rulers, they transformed the kings into animals. As a result, Mario had to visit each kingdom, and defeat the Koopaling in charge in order to restore their true king. After beating all seven, Mario and Luigi had to contend with the master of the Koopalings - Bowser.
A sequel to could move in a similar direction, with Bowser Jr. realizing that they need more help to defeat Mario and his friends. Such an approach would work well with the storytelling format of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which split up its main characters. In this case, the heroes could split up into small groups to take down all the Koopalings individually.
2 Star Fox
Glenn Powell's performance as Fox McCloud was one of the most enjoyable parts of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, hence why it wouldn't be a major surprise if Nintendo pursues a solo Star Fox project. The movie already handed him a supporting cast, as Fox's introductory sequence also featured Slippy Toad, Falco Lombardi, and Peppy Hare.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie avoided revealing how much of Fox McCloud's story has already happened, so a movie could easily start with the beginning, which is his battle with the evil Andross in the original Star Fox game from 1993. A Star Fox film would further expand Nintendo's world, and add another step toward a Super Smash Bros. crossover.
1 Luigi's Mansion
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie quietly established some key building blocks for a story based on Luigi's Mansion. In the game, Luigi enters a haunted house occupied by King Boo and several other supernatural beings. To fight them, Luigi has to use the Poltergust 3000, a highly advanced vaccuum cleaner that sucks up ghosts.
The Poltergust 3000 is given to him by Professor E. Gadd, who has effectively become the chief scientist of the Mario franchise. The brilliant inventor is the brains behind several major Super Mario items, including the Magic Paintbrush that Bowser Jr. uses in Super Mario Sunshine.
Curiously, the Magic Paintbrush isn't the only E. Gadd invention shown to be in Bowser Jr.'s possession. Easter eggs in the film confirmed he also has F.L.U.D.D and the Poltgegust 3000. A nearby coffee cug with the E. Gadd Science company logo on it builds evidence for the idea that all these devices were stolen from E. Gadd.
Professor E. Gadd evidently does exist in the world of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a which bolsters hopes of a future Luigi's Mansion story. E. Gadd is a major figure in all three Luigi's Mansion games and the inventor of every item in the main character's arsenal. Being vital to Luigi's ghost-hunting activities, he'd be a must for any adaptation of the story.
Interestingly, there's already a reason for Luigi and E. Gadd to meet. If Bowser and Bowser Jr.'s defeat leads to Mario and Luigi coming into possession of the Magic Paintbrush and the other devices of E. Gadd, they could seek out their rightful owners, thus opening the door for a proper Luigi's Mansion adventure.
