Formed in 1976, Def Leppard quickly emerged as one of the best up-and-coming bands in metal. As an English rock band, they first found success in the UK with their debut album, On Through the Night. However, their second record brought them mainstream success as their song "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" became one of the most popular videos on MTV. Next up was Pyromania, which reached number two on the Billboard 200, cementing the band as one of the best in the business.At this point, it felt like nothing could slow them down. Their career was becoming everything they had dreamed of and the only question now was how much higher their success could go. Unfortunately, everything changed on December 31, 1984, when one of the band members was involved in an automobile accident that would alter his life forever, leaving a lot to be considered.
In an attempt to pass another vehicle, Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen lost control of his Corvette, causing him to crash into a stone wall. Allen was then thrown from the car, with his left arm becoming severed after getting caught in the seatbelt. After being rushed to the hospital, an attempt was made to reattach Allen's arm, but an infection prevented this from being successful. Therefore, he was left without his left arm. This life-altering accident caused him to rethink everything.

During an appearance on the Greg Hill Show, Rick Allen discussed the initial thoughts he had while sitting in the hospital: "When I finally realized that I'd actually lost my arm when I came around in hospital, I really didn't wanna be here and I didn't want to see anybody." Allen admitted to feeling self-conscious at first, which made him want to see only his brother and his parents. However, he received a visit from Def Leppard's producer that changed everything.
When Robert John "Mutt" Lange arrived to be by Allen's side, he made the drummer focus on what he could do, instead of the negatives Allen had been fixating on. Allen said that this visit helped him "Dig in and find the power of the human spirit." Now feeling uplifted from the thoughts he had been having, the next step for him was to reconvene with his bandmates and see what their thoughts were about the future.

An Inspirational Story Was Created
After relearning how to play the drums thanks to his special kit designed by the Simmons Drum Manufacturing Company, Allen was ready to become an inspiration to so many others. During his same appearance on the Greg Hill Show, Allen spoke about what he tries to do in order to uplift others: "I have to go back to the early days of feeling defeated and hopefully leading through example and doing what I do." Allen is hopeful others will catch what he is doing, and it will encourage them dig in more.
As time went on, Allen reminded himself of important lessons he'd learned, as it wasn't always easy to continue to accept what had happened. Sharing his wisdom, he mentioned how he now looks at life: "I stopped comparing myself to how I used to be, and I tried to stop comparing myself to others." Allen has now embraced what he is doing as unique. He has chosen to view the situation as no one else plays the way he does. This sets him apart from all the other major drummers in the world.

With Allen back behind the drum kit, Def Leppard released their album Hysteria in 1987. To truly capture everything they experienced, the band even wrote a book to document the years leading up to it. Eventually, it became their most successful record. For Rick Allen, he continues to be an inspiration to many, including veterans, with whom he has worked for years, helping them with their own PTSD.
