With the rampant success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 21st century thus far, the Marvel Comics brand has become one of the biggest titles in modern entertainment. The saga has an enormous catalog of characters throughout its comic book history, with somewhere in the range of 8,000 staple characters marking just the main figures from an extensive, multi-layered universe that has upwards of 80,000 characters in total.
Ranging from the Gods of Norse mythology to superhuman scientists, magical beings, alien warriors, and even to all-powerful celestial entities, the power rankings of Marvel Comics' vast array of heroes and villains has long been an intense topic of debate among the franchise's fans. From iconic heroes of the MCU to some of the deadliest threats the X-Men have ever faced, and to plenty of powerful beings that lurk in the shadows, these characters are the most powerful in Marvel's expanded stories.
40 Mad Jim Jaspers
First Appearance: 'Daredevils #7' (1983)
One of the most duplicitous and conniving characters in Marvel’s pantheon of heroes and villains, Mad Jim Jaspers—also known simply as James Jaspers—is a British politician whose strong anti-superhero views saw him become the Leader of the Conservative Party and even the Prime Minister for a brief time. It was only later that it was revealed that he was himself a mutant who used his vast reality-warping powers to alter circumstances to his favor.
While he is largely defined solely by his ability to change reality, Mad Jim Jaspers is still among the most powerful beings in the superhero universe. The scope of his powers is near limitless within any given universe, even having the ability to resurrect the dead and create new sentient lifeforms from scratch. Beyond his superhuman abilities, Jaspers also wields plenty of social influence with his standing in British politics and his persuasive charisma.
39 Nimrod
First Appearance: 'X-Men (Vol. 5) #20' (2021)
Image via Marvel ComicsThe most advanced and vindictive of all the Sentinels, Nimrod is a robotic villain who uses both his physical might and his strategic prowess to be one of the mightiest antagonists and persecutors the X-Men—and the wider mutant community—have ever faced. Born from Dr. Alia Gregor’s grief, Nimrod was initially conceived as a way in which Gregor could cling on to the consciousness of her late husband. When they were attacked almost immediately after Gregor successfully saw out her task, however, her husband’s consciousness was vanquished, leaving Nimrod without any humanity.
Declaring himself the “Great Hunter,” the Sentinel utilizes his vast array of powers in his conquest to bring about an end not only to all mutants, but to all biological life on Earth as well. In addition to being incredibly strong and programmed with expert tactical nous, Nimrod is also highly adaptable, capable of teleportation and flight, and can even duplicate himself while maintaining control over all the bodies.
38 Genis-Vell
First Appearance: 'Silver Surfer Annual #6' (1993)
Image via Marvel ComicsA being born from Mar-Vell’s DNA after his death, as his mother, the Titanian Eternal hybrid Elysius, used the advanced technology at her disposal to impregnate herself, Genis-Vell has been one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe since his youth. His powers have only grown and developed over time, with Genis-Vell surpassing both of his parents in regard to superhuman abilities, even if he still requires the Nega-Bands to access the full breadth of his powers.
The limitations of many of his powers remain largely unknown, but Genis-Vell is in possession of superhuman strength, durability, and speed while also having the ability to absorb and metabolize energy and even being imbued with cosmic awareness that makes him one of the most intelligent beings in existence. While he excels in the vacuum of space, his only debilitating physical weakness is his inability to survive underwater. Despite his immense power, it is unlikely he will feature in the MCU anytime soon.
37 Spider-Man
First Appearance: 'Amazing Fantasy #15' (1962)
Image via Marvel ComicsThe friendly neighborhood superhero is not only one of Marvel’s most iconic and beloved characters, but he has evolved to be one of the saga’s most supremely powerful as well over time. An orphaned teenager raised by his aunt and uncle, Peter Parker’s ordinary life of high school monotony changes forever when he is bitten by a radioactive spider, imbuing him with incredible physical abilities that he uses to stand against evil.
While in possession of spider physiology, including the proportionate strength, speed, and agility that is considered to be superhuman, Spider-Man also has heightened senses, regenerative powers, and a genius-level intellect, particularly in the field of engineering. While different versions of Spider-Man could be considered, such as Cosmic Spider-Man, who first appeared in ‘Amazing Spider-Man (vol.3) #9’ in 2014, or the brief appearance of Spider-Hulk, Peter Parker still possesses plenty of power in his own right.
36 Marquis of Death
First Appearance: 'Fantastic Four #562' (2009)
Image via Marvel ComicsDespite the fact that he is one of the newer characters in the Marvel Comics and his appearance has only been a brief one at that, the Marquis of Death is still an entity defined by his immense power and ambition. Having dedicated a billion years of his existence to the study of Time and Space, the Marquis is an all-powerful being with the ability to manipulate reality and destroy entire planets and civilizations.
In ‘Fantastic Four #562’, the Marquis of Death arrives on Earth and begins mentoring a young Victor von Doom, but when he returns to Earth 20 years later, he expresses disappointment at Doom’s failings against the Fantastic Four. Manipulative and domineering, he becomes Doom’s sworn enemy after showing him a perfect life, then stripping it away from him. The Marquis of Death was ultimately killed by a vengeful Dr. Doom in ‘Fantastic Four #569’.
35 Amatsu-Mikaboshi
First Appearance: 'Ares #2' (2006)
Image via Marvel ComicsAnother somewhat new installment to the Marvel Comics array of characters, Amatsu-Mikaboshi is a deceptive evildoer imbued with divine power. The God of Evil, Chaos, and the Stars in the Shinto religion of Japan, Amatsu-Mikaboshi is blessed with nigh omnipotence and an in-depth understanding of dark magic, as well as possessing superhuman strength, durability, reflexes, accelerated healing, immortality, and the ability to absorb and replicate the powers of those he kills.
Heralded as the Chaos King, Amatsu-Mikaboshi’s true nature is that of a primordial being, one who was cast into a prison in the Shinto underworld, Yomi, for centuries. The demonic god was the major antagonist of the Chaos War arc, and has frequently been an enemy of heroes like Hercules and Thor.
34 Hyperion
First Appearance: 'The Avengers #69' (1969)
Image via Marvel ComicsAn eternal from another dimension, Hyperion arrived on Earth-616 after his own home reality, Earth-13034, was decimated and destroyed by an incursion. Equipped with eternal physiology that grants him superhuman strength, speed, durability, stamina, as well as the ability of flight and enhanced vision, Hyperion became one of the most powerful members of the Avengers—as well as the paternal figure of the Children of the Sun—and formed a close bond with Thor Odinson in his travels.
When the Multiverse was on the brink of collapse, it was Hyperion and Thor who embarked on a one-way mission to stand against the Beyonders, an ordeal that they did not survive. However, the restoration of the Multiverse saw them both return, with Hyperion forming the Squadron Supreme before leaving. His civilian identity is Marcus Milton, and he works as a trucker.
33 Thanos
First Appearance: 'Iron Man #55' (1972)
Image via Marvel StudiosIn both the MCU and Marvel Comics, Thanos is an ominous villain made distinct by his appetite for violence and his conviction in his extremist ideals. Heralded as the Mad Titan, Thanos is one of the most significant and dangerous threats the Avengers have ever had to battle. The true depths of his evil were only glimpsed in the MCU, as some of the character’s most horrific actions in the comics include killing his own mother as a child and pursuing the love of Mistress Death.
Thanos’ powers in the comics are near limitless. While he possesses all the physical attributes like advanced strength, healing, stamina, and even immortality, he is also imbued with God-like powers and hyper-cosmic awareness. He can only be viewed as one of the most powerful characters in the comics and ranks among the greatest adversaries any of Marvel’s pantheon of heroes has ever faced.
32 Captain Universe
First Appearance: 'Micronauts #8' (1979)
Image via Marvel ComicsThe Enigma Force, also known as a God of Light, dates back to the earliest origins of the universe and has been in an eternal war with the dark god Knull. When the Enigma Force discovered it was more effective to channel its power into one vessel, its decisive host came to be Captain Universe, who isn’t so much a character with a singular identity as much as it is a persona that has consistently merged with new hosts throughout the comic books.
While Captain Universe’s abilities can vary from one host to another, the entity typically flaunts superhuman strength, speed, durability, and stamina as its physical advancements, while also being graced with a cosmic awareness of mounting threats, the ability to rearrange and manipulate matter, and advanced senses. As immensely powerful as it is, though, Captain Universe’s abilities only excel in the universe of its origin, meaning when it ventures to other realities, its powers disappear.
31 Dormammu
First Appearance: 'Strange Tales #126' (1964)
Image via Marvel StudiosA demonic entity who rules over the Dark Dimension and seeks to bring Earth and humanity under his domain, Dormammu is one of the defining villains of Doctor Strange as well as one of the most powerful figures in the Marvel saga. Acknowledged by Doctor Strange to be a threat to all life in the universe, Dormammu can travel through dimensions and time, can manipulate matter to his will, alter reality, and is even capable of resurrecting the dead.
His powers only multiply when he is in the Dark Dimension, and the worship of his followers imbues him with greater strength. When operating at the full force of his potential powers, Dormammu is said to be the most powerful being in existence, one that no one can stand against. He remains one of the most wasted characters in the MCU thus far.
