Four years ago, Ryan Gosling starred in a Russo Brothers-directed film, The Gray Man. Released on Netflix in July 2022, Gosling plays Sierra Six, an elite black ops officer on the run after he obtains a hard drive that contains proof of corruption from one of the CIA officers. Now, after receiving praise from audiences since its release, the Russo Brothers give a disappointing update on The Gray Man's future.

In 2022, it was announced that The Gray Man would receive both a sequel and a spin-off film on Netflix following its strong streaming debut. The action thriller landed at #1 on Netflix's Top 10 English Movies charts and remained there for six weeks. As of this writing, the film holds a high audience score of 90%, but generated a low critics' score of 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by the Russo Brothers, The Gray Man marked their second feature film after Avengers: Endgame. The movie features a star-studded cast, starring alongside Gosling, including Chris Evans (Captain America), Ana de Armas (Ballerina), Billy Bob Thornton (Armageddon), Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Wagner Moura (Civil War), and Julia Butters (Freakier Friday).

Updates on the sequel to The Gray Man have been scarce since the 2022 announcement. In 2023, the Russo Brothers told Collider they were still working on the script and were "hard at work" to bring the follow-up film to life. A few months later, Head of Netflix film, Scott Stuber, gave Collider a vague response on the sequel's future, saying "that's a maybe." Now, in an interview with Screen Rant, the Russo Brothers revealed that there isn't "any momentum news right now" for The Gray Man's sequel; however, they shared that there are people "still thinking about it."

What Are The Russo Brothers Currently Working On?

The Russo Brothers are currently working on Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in December 2026. While Gosling isn't part of this feature, Evans is reprising his role as Captain America in this superhero film. Production began back in March 2025 and filming wrapped in September 2025. Marvel Studios released a live "Doomsday Clock" countdown to the film's release and four teaser trailers, first shown exclusively during screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash and later published on social media. The Russo Brothers are also set to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for release in 2027.

The Gray Man is available to stream on Netflix. Follow Collider to stay up to date with the latest updates.
