After spending several weeks at the top of Prime Video’s movie charts, Ángel Manuel Soto’s buddy-cop action movie The Wrecking Crew has been dethroned by a new challenger: the Guy Ritchie spy-action comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. Starring Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, and more, the comedic thriller is a fun, entertaining take on the spy genre that has proven quite popular with audiences, particularly on streaming. But Operation Fortune isn’t the only enjoyable film streaming on the service right now. So, without further ado, here’s a look at the three best movies that we think you should watch on Prime Video this week, ranging from the wildly hilarious to the intensely dramatic.

Co-written and directed by Darius Marder, Sound of Metal is a music drama that stars Riz Ahmed as metal drummer Ruben Stone, who tours the country with his singer girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke). After he is diagnosed with progressive loss of hearing, Ruben insists on continuing to perform, which worries Lou, who is also concerned about his sobriety because of his history with drug addiction. The movie also stars Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, and Mathieu Amalric in key roles.

Sound of Metal is a sharply written and masterfully performed drama that explores the internal and interpersonal conflicts that arise from the threat of losing the one thing you love most. The film was widely acclaimed after its premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, earning praise for Ahmed’s central performance and the intensely dramatic story. The film went on to receive multiple accolades, including six Academy Award nominations and two wins in the Best Sound and Best Film Editing categories.

2 ‘The Girl With All the Gifts’ (2016)

Directed by Colm McCarthy, The Girl with All the Gifts is a British post-apocalyptic adventure drama based on the sci-fi horror novel by Mike Carey, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Set in a dystopian future where most of humanity has been wiped out by a fungal infection that turns people into zombies, the film follows a scientist, a teacher, and two soldiers as they attempt to survive this world alongside a human-zombie hybrid child named Melanie. The movie stars Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, and Glenn Close, with Sennia Nanua as Melanie.

The Girl with All the Gifts had its premiere at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival, where it earned critical acclaim for its innovative take on the zombie horror genre. The film starts with familiar tropes of the genre, but the narrative slowly ventures into new, unexplored directions, raising some interesting questions about the future of the species in the process. Elevated by its stellar performances and grounded style, the movie is arguably one of the most original horror movies of the past decade and is well worth a watch.

1 ‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’ (2023)

As we already mentioned above, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is a spy action comedy directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie. Jason Statham stars as super-spy Orson Fortune, and the film follows Fortune on a mission to retrieve an advanced AI device from an unscrupulous arms dealer, played by Hugh Grant. Besides Statham and Grant, the movie also stars Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, and Bugzy Malone in significant roles.

After over a year of delays, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre was released in theaters in 2023 to generally mixed reviews and a disappointing box office performance. However, though it might not be one of Ritchie’s best films, the movie is an entertaining watch with plenty of sharp dialogue and idiosyncratic characters that fans have come to expect from the filmmaker. It’s a light yet sufficiently thrilling spy movie anchored by the charismatic performances of its talented cast, particularly those of Jason Statham and Hugh Grant.
