Disney+'s movies to watch this weekend range from a new arrival to a timely romance and an exhilarating sci-fi fantasy hit. On last weekend's Disney+ movie recommendations, I talked about National Treasure, Maleficent, and Avatar. At the time of writing, the Angelina Jolie movie is the 7th most-watched on the streamer in the United States, and that list includes one of the projects to watch this weekend.
The past Disney+ movie selection focused on delivering different genres for viewers, allowing everyone to take their pick. Those were adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi, with Avatar being the highest-grossing movie of all time, making the list quite stacked. This time around, the lines do get blurry in terms of genres, as not all three of the films are different from one another.
For those looking at Disney+'s best movies to get a nice dose of adrenaline, there is an action-packed entry waiting for you on the list. Other recommendations are lighter, with both being quite romantic films. One of them is timely, serving as a nice companion to a film currently in theaters. The other is the perfect family movie for the weekend.
All in all, these three movies on Disney+ promise to make for an exciting three-movie binge for the whole family. We start with a softer touch, building up to what is undoubtedly the most thrilling movie on the list. That said, all films are strong individually, and they feature several stars.
3 The Princess Diaries (2001)
Starting the recommendations is The Princess Diaries. As I had already talked about The Devil Wears Prada in an earlier April Disney+ weekend movie recommendations, the Anne Hathaway princess movie serves as a fitting companion to her new theatrical release, The Devil Wears Prada 2. If you are not making the trip to theaters, then get in on the fun with a Hathaway classic.
In The Princess Diaries, Hathaway gives life to the 15-year-old Mia Thermopolis, who, after her absent father's death, suddenly discovers that she is the princess of Genovia, a European nation. The movie follows a coming-of-age tale with a royal twist, as Mia grows closer to her grandmother, Julie Andrews' Clarisse Renaldi, finds love, and more. The Princess Diaries is currently Disney+'s 9th most-watched movie worldwide (via FlixPatrol).
2 We Bought A Zoo (2011)
Next up on the list is We Bought a Zoo, which has just arrived on Disney+ this Friday, May 1. Aside from being a new arrival, the family comedy is the perfect follow-up in tone to The Princess Diaries, making for an excellent second entry in our three-movie weekend binge. The movie has a talented cast, featuring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, Thomas Haden Church, and more.
As its title suggests, the movie follows Damon's Benjamin Mee as he moves with his family and buys a zoo that is falling apart, making it their goal to get it ready to reopen. The emotional backbone of the story is that Benjamin is trying to get his family to restart their life months after his wife, Katherine, died. Johansson plays zookeeper Kelly Foster, with the film featuring plenty of laughs, a few tears, and a warm love story.
1 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Finally, Spider-Man: Homecoming closes the weekend movie binge on Disney+ in style. While The Princess Diaries brings the fun, and We Bought a Zoo dives into the emotion, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie combines both and adds a lot of action to make it the perfect final movie to watch on Disney+ this weekend and leave on a high.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day releasing in theaters on July 31, Tom Holland's first MCU Spider-Man movie is a timely release. Additionally, the film has the latest appearance of Michael Mando's Mac Gargan, who will return as Scorpion in the 2026 Marvel movie, making the time right to rewatch it. Viewers who chose to do so can enjoy Holland's funny and relatable Peter Parker, as well as Michael Keaton's menacing Vulture, on Disney+ this weekend.
