You could argue that the run of games on the original PlayStation (extending to the PlayStation 2 era) is one of the best generations in gaming. Nintendo generally knocks it out of the park in most generations, but the amount of third-party support on Sony platforms, before the Xbox even existed, really tipped it over the edge in some cases.

Speaking of classic revivals, thanks to a new announcement from Console Archives, you can enjoy a classic PlayStation 1 game on modern consoles.

Available on both PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, you can now pick up Geki-Oh ShienRyu, thanks to Hamster's Console Archives initiative. Originally conceived as "Arcade Archives" in 2014, Hamster Corporation aimed to bring classic arcade games back to current systems, kicking things off on the PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Now, all these years later, they've started another line called "Console Archives," which seeks to revive old, dormant games for a new era. For retro fans, it's an incredibly useful service, as it often brings back titles that are hundreds of dollars on the physical market.

Console Archives began in earnest in February 2026, with Cool Boarders and Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos. Since then, it's added numerous games to the line, including Geki-Oh ShienRyu.

Originally released in 2002 in North America on PlayStation (1999 in Japan), Geki-Oh ShienRyu, also known as just ShienRyu, is a vertical shooter developed by Warashi. Like many shoot 'em ups (shmups) of that era, it was well-liked by genre enthusiasts and supports multiplayer off the bat.

Here's the full rundown from Hamster: "Geki-Oh ShienRyu was released by Warashi in 1999 for a 32-bit home console. In this shooting game, you must take down waves of enemy forces and colossal war machines attacking with relentless fury. 'Shoot and dodge' gameplay at its absolute peak! Counter them with your own overwhelming firepower. The game also features a variety of bonus modes, adding even more depth to the experience!"

If you never played this classic shmup on the original PlayStation, now would be a good time to take in another entry in the genre's history.
