2026's New R-Rated Batman Movie Is Officially One Of The Biggest Movies On Streaming Ahead Of Trilogy Return

Batman's new 2026 movie has come to impress on streaming, and this R-rated DC film marks the start of a new trilogy. In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in DC's Batman movies. The two biggest such projects are live-action. After a stellar theatrical run in 2022, Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel, The Batman - Part II, is currently filming for a February 18, 2028, release. Parallel to that, James Gunn's DC Universe is getting ready to expand with its own Bruce Wayne project. The Dark Knight is expected to debut in the announced The Brave and the Bold.

However, DC's slate of releases also packs a few animated Batman movies, not only the high-profile live-action films that tend to dominate conversation. One of those was Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, an Elseworlds DC movie that merged Batman lore with Aztec culture, and was released on September 18, 2025. As a non-canon release when it comes to the shared DCU, the animated movie had more leeway, being an R-rated release. Recently, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall continued that trend of animated Elseworlds Batman movies with an R rating, and it is currently trending on streaming after an August 25 release.

Batman: Knightfall Is Already Back As A Streaming Hit

At the time of writing, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall is the 21st most-watched movie on Amazon VOD in the United States. The new R-rated DC movie trends at the same time that Milly Alcock's Supergirl leads HBO Max worldwide as its #1 movie, according to FlixPatrol. That live-action DCU movie arrived on the streamer on Thursday, September 10. Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall's newfound success on Amazon VOD also comes ahead of a new R-rated movie from DC Studios. That would be Clayface, which centers itself on the Batman villain, and offers something new as a body horror movie.

On Amazon VOD's Top 25 Movies chart, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall ranks higher than a few major and/or timely releases. 2026's R-rated Batman movie leaves in the dust Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which recently landed on Disney+ on September 2, In The Grey, Guy Ritchie's new spy thriller with Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, United 93, which has started trending following the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and Jackass: Best and Last, the final film in the popular franchise. The Trilogy Will Continue Very Soon

Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall is meant to mark the start of a new Batman movie trilogy. It is to be followed by Batman: Knightfall Part 2, which will adapt the "Knightquest" chapter of the Knightfall storyline in DC Comics. The first trailer for DC's next animated Batman movie is confirmed to be released on Batman Day, September 19. The DC movie itself will also be released in late 2026, marking the arrival of two new Batman movies in the same year. As such, with Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall trending on Amazon VOD, that momentum can carry over to its sequel.
