With The Mandalorian and Grogu now out in theaters, many eyes in the fanbase are looking ahead to what new projects will be announced. Right now, several upcoming Star Wars movies are reportedly in the works, although Ryan Gosling's movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, is the only one with a confirmed release date (May 28, 2027). Upcoming Star Wars TV shows are equally sparse. In terms of canon shows, only two are confirmed to be releasing: Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord season 2 and Ahsoka season 2.

Notably, neither upcoming show has a confirmed release date yet. This therefore marks one of the quietest periods for Star Wars, at least over the last several years. Since essentially 2019, Star Wars TV shows in particular have been booming—especially live-action shows. The franchise seems to now be seriously slowing down in that department, perhaps shifting back to a primary focus on movies, but surely new shows and movies will be announced soon either way.

What those new projects will be remains mysterious, even as there is ample speculation about what Star Wars may have in the works behind the scenes (with fan-favorite theories like a Darth Vader movie or show and/or a live-action Star Wars: The Clone Wars series constantly circulating). However, recent comments from two major stars in The Mandalorian and Grogu at Fan Expo Philadelphia have now hinted that one movie and one rather unexpected TV show may be on the horizon, and they're actually both sequel stories.

Brendan Wayne Heavily Hinted The Mandalorian And Grogu 2 Will Happen

Although Pedro Pascal may be the face of Din Djarin/the titular Mandalorian in both The Mandalorian series and The Mandalorian and Grogu, there are actually multiple actors who play Din Djarin. One of these actors, Brendan Wayne, is frequently the actor in the suit, thereby bringing the physical presence and movements of the character to life. Given that role, Wayne is, of course, heavily involved in the current and future trajectory for the character, which makes his recent comments all the more interesting.

Specifically, at Fan Expo Philadelphia this past weekend, for which Screen Rant was in attendance, Wayne spoke about the future for Din Djarin and Grogu, and he spoke with a fair degree of certainty about the fact that the characters will be back on the screen (whether the big screen or the small screen) in the future. Wayne shared:

We also know, or maybe only I do, that there is definitely a place in the world for more of us...I think the audiences have given us the permission to proceed. I don't know if it's going to be on the small screen or the big screen, my guess is the big screen, but I'm looking forward to it.

While this isn't a direct confirmation of The Mandalorian season 4, The Mandalorian and Grogu 2, or another potential project, based on these comments, audiences can apparently safely feel confident that they haven't seen the last of these beloved characters. Interestingly, Wayne's belief that this follow-up project will be a movie is also the opposite of what many fans have been expressing since the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu.

In part, that may have to do with the mixed reviews of The Mandalorian and Grogu, although the movie ended up having a very positive audience Rotten Tomatoes score. Presumably, Disney's decision regarding a sequel story would depend in part on reception, so perhaps the movie has performed well enough to warrant another big screen appearance in Disney's eyes—certainly, Wayne would have a better sense of whether that's the case than general audiences at this stage.

Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen in The Book of Boba Fett

At the same panel where Brendan Wayne commented on the future of Din Djarin and Grogu, Jonny Coyne, who played Lord Janu Coin in The Mandalorian and Grogu, also spoke about the Star Wars projects that he was initially going to be involved in following his appearance in The Mandalorian season 3, one of which was The Mandalorian season 4, which comes as no surprise.

Fans are already aware that The Mandalorian season 4 was in the works before it was (possibly) replaced with The Mandalorian and Grogu, as Jon Favreau previously confirmed that he had written it. However, more surprising were Coyne's comments about potentially appearing in an episode of The Book of Boba Fett. Specifically, Coyne said:

They said they were going to put me into [The Mandalorian] season 4, and maybe a possible Boba Fett episode as well, and then it all went away. It all went away, and then the movie happened.

What is most notable about this is the fact that these conversations, at least based on what Coyne shared during the panel, were happening after The Mandalorian season 3 (especially considering he said, "Then it all went away"). The discussion about The Book of Boba Fett episode therefore could not have been in reference to The Book of Boba Fett season 1, as that predated The Mandalorian season 3. Rather, Coyne's words suggest that Star Wars was at one point actively considering a second season of that show.

Granted, that could mean that Star Wars considered the idea and ultimately axed the project, particularly considering the reception to The Book of Boba Fett season 1. Yet, this revelation feels like a new one, and not for nothing, Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison, who was sitting next to Coyne during the panel, does have a reaction to Coyne's comments, almost as though Coyne is touching upon a topic that is meant to be kept under wraps.

Of course, that's speculative. Morrison could just as easily have been showing support over the fact that Coyne also missed out on a second season of The Book of Boba Fett. However, the question remains: With Star Wars evidently having toyed with the idea of The Book of Boba Fett season 2, and the other comments and behaviors from the actors during the panel, could The Book of Boba Fett season 2 still be on the cards?

Should Star Wars Move Forward With These Projects?

Grogu and The Mandalorian looking from behind a hill in The Mandalorian and Grogu

Neither The Mandalorian and Grogu 2 nor The Book of Boba Fett season 2 is currently confirmed, but after this panel, they feel more likely than they have before. Yet, the question remains whether Star Wars really will—or should—make either. As mentioned, The Mandalorian and Grogu getting a sequel movie will likely depend largely on the success of the movie. Presumably, that means a mix of reviews and numbers at the box office. If The Mandalorian and Grogu performs well in those categories (and it seems like it largely has), then a sequel makes perfect sense.

The Book of Boba Fett season 2 would be slightly more complicated. Although Morrison is a brilliant actor and Boba Fett is a beloved character, the show was poorly received, and it remains one of Star Wars' worst rated shows. It would therefore be a surprise if the show really did return for a second season. However, one rule of Star Wars is never say never, and perhaps after The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise is willing to take another chance on that story.
